and First Coast News
Vibrant Life Health Center and First Coast News are collaborating on a new way to reach out to the community with information on how to achieve wellness and fitness. It’s called Life in Balance. Our bodies have been designed to be healthy. However, many of us do things throughout our lives which throw the body out of balance and away from health.
The strategies, programs, and pills that have been around for so many years, have just not provided people with the solutions they need for their health problems. Also, many people spend lots of time in the gym without seeing the results they want. They sometimes end up feeling that going to the gym is a waste of time and money.
If you’re sick and tired of being sick and tired, or know someone who is, Life in Balance can help. There is more information available now about health and wellness than there ever has been in the past. We can now get answers to questions like these:

  • How much water should a person consume per day?
  • Does that amount vary based on factors like the size and weight of a person, or the weather outside, or a person’s lifestyle?
  • What types of exercise should a person engage?
  • What are the variables that a person should consider to determine what exercise is best for him or her?
  • Should a person engage in different types of exercises on alternating days?
  • What is an effective routine for starting the day? Are eggs good for breakfast? What about shakes and smoothies?
  • How can I apply the information I have access to so that it will produce the results I’m looking for in terms of wellness, fitness, and weight?

Each person is unique and each person has different needs. For example, a person who dresses up in a mascot suit and then has to move around in the heat will need a very different hydration plan than someone working in an air conditioned office.
Vibrant Life Health Center and First Coast Living are introducing Life in Balance as a means of bringing information about all the key elements of wellness and fitness together. We will be broadcasting segments tailored to the needs of viewers and anyone in the community who wants to live a healthier and more fulfilling life. Life in Balance webpages are being hosted in the First Coast Living section of the First Coast News website. We’re also looking forward to interacting via social media outlets dedicated to Life in Balance.
At Vibrant Life Health Center, we know that little things lead to big results. For example, eating an ice cream Sunday after every meal for a year will produce a big result – an undesirable expanding waistline. That’s one thing most people would prefer not to have. On the other hand, a person who simply takes a brisk walk around the block after every meal instead of indulging in an ice cream Sunday will see positive results like weight reduction, improved cardiovascular health, and more.
Life in Balance is going to be one portal where people living on the First Coast will be able to access all of the information they need in order to make decisions that will have a positive impact on their health and wellness.

Beth lost 110 pounds in a year on NutriMost.
Beth’s story is an amazing example of a person bringing her life back into balance. NutriMost was a big part of that.
“I’ve been through the NutriMost program three times and I am down over 100 pounds since July of 2015. Dr. Thomas is phenomenal and I wouldn’t trade him for any other doctor. When he told me I had the body of a ninety-nine-year-old woman and I was only forty-six, I knew it was time to get serious about making changes. When I started the program, I was at 324 pounds and now I’m down to about 200. I’ve gone from a size 26 pants to a size twelve. I went from a 5X shirt to a large or extra-large shirt. I got my health and my life back. That wouldn’t have happened without NutriMost.

Pat lost 54 pounds on NutriMost.
Pat has also had astonishing results with NutriMost.
“The day I got on the scale and saw that I weighed 202 pounds, I knew I needed to make a change. I walked through my living room and saw Dr. Thomas talking about NutriMost on First Coast Living on TV. I had been to Weight Watchers and another program and neither of those had worked for me. I set up a consultation with Dr. Thomas and I felt really comfortable with him. The program made more sense to me than anything I had tried before. It involved eating properly and it had someone helping you along the way. Every morning I texted my weight to Dr. Thomas. That kept me focused on the program. I’m not used to reporting to anybody. I’m used to people reporting to me. I’ve lost 54 pounds and I feel great. Just after I signed up for NutriMost, my daughter told me she was pregnant with my first grandchild. It’s wonderful that instead of being out of breath and not being able to touch my toes, I can pick up my grandson. He is sixteen pounds now and I have no problem picking him up.

Why I decided to use the NutriMost System to lose weight

I lost 29 Lbs officially in 40 days!
By Hector Cisneros

If you’re like most Americans, you’re a little overweight. In fact, according to the CDC, more than 1/3 of people in the United States are considered obese!  Those of you who know me, also know that I am a bit of a health nut. However, even with all my knowledge of health, I was losing the battle of the bulge. My story starts when my weight kept creeping up, even though I was walking on average about 5 miles a day. My blood pressure was inching up as well and I was starting to get joint pain in my elbow, back, neck, hands and knees. On top of that, my left ankle began to hurt after a long backpacking trip with the Boy Scouts last year. It was still hurting after almost a year and no healing was in sight.

I have been a strong proponent of chiropractic and have been happy with several practitioners over the last 25 years. I met Dr. Thomas through the Jacksonville Chamber where I helped them learn about marketing through the Marketing Matters program the Chamber puts on. (I am one of their mentors).  I set up an appointment to see what he could do for my ongoing minor aches and pains. My idea was to use him to get regular chiropractic tune-ups and to look at any other problems that might occur when you are past your prime. Dr. Jon, his wife Tracy and I got to know each other over time and they learned about my business as a web marketer. Dr. Jon told me that they liked my marketing ideas and chose us to manage their website and take over their internet marketing.

Here is my testimonial for Dr. Thomas's Chiropratic care.

Dr. Jon did a heck of a good job on my neck and back and was also able to help with my ankle pain. However, while getting treated I always noticed all the testimonials on the walls in his office for the NutriMost weight loss program that they administer to their patients. I started talking to several of their patients about their experience with that system and all were very enthusiastic. I also noticed all of the video testimonials, “thank you” postcards and emails they received regarding that program. It was success after success. The sheer number of testimonials was amazing.

Now I know I am a marketing guy, but just like anyone who has slowly gained weight, (I am 5’7” and reached 204 lbs.). I found myself wanting to lose weight just like all the successful patients I was talking to. I set up an appointment for myself and my wife to learn the details of the NutriMost program.

After watching a video that explains many of the details, Dr. Thomas, weighed us, measured our BMI and gave us our metabolic age. Since both of us were more than 20lbs over weight, we were surprised to see that our metabolic age was much higher than our actual age. It was a rude awaking.
Dr. Thomas took the time to explain the program details to us and asked if we were committed to losing at least 20 pounds. He explained how the program is customized to each individual and how the food choices are based on the RF (resonance frequency) of each person.  My wife and I signed up for the program and set a start date 4 days hence. We went shopping for the foods that were particular to our diet plan. We had many overlaps and several differences as well. But we had enough food in common that it made the shopping easier.

I thought I would be very hungry on this program, but I was pleasantly surprised to find I was not. After my first day on the program, I lost a full pound. My wife lost a ½ lb. as well. By day five I had lost 4.5 lbs. and my energy level was sky high. My wife was having low energy so Dr. Thomas adjusted her supplements, and like magic, her energy level and mood was up, just like mine. It was really neat to see how Dr. Thomas supervise us individually and customizes the program for each of our own body chemistry.

At 11 days I had lost 10 lbs. and by day 20 I had lost 17 pounds. My wife was losing weight quickly as well, but women usually lose weight a little slower than men because of the chemistry differences between men and women. By day 30 I had lost 25 lbs. and reached my goal. My wife had lost 17 lbs. and we still had 10 days left to go. By day 40, I had lost 30 lbs. and my wife had lost 19 pounds. Undeterred, my wife reached her goal during the 4-day transition period you enter when you come off the 40-day program. This transition period occurs as you prepare to wean off the supplements and resume your new healthy lifestyle and eat the things you like and have learned that also keep you out of fat storage (i.e. keep metabolism efficient).

My wife and I have almost finished all four phases of the NutriMost program and I can tell you the experience has been a godsend. We are now in phase four.  Phase four is what I call the education phase where you learn what puts you in fat storage mode. I have discovered many foods that shut down fat burning and put weight on me really fast. The good news is that all I have to do is eat the foods I know (and like) that put me in fat burning mode and any weight I gain quickly gets burned off.  I can get right back to my healthy weight set point quickly and I have been able to maintain my goal weight for more than a month so far.  I continue to experiment with different foods to see what puts on weight and helps me take it off. It’s become a health habit to do so. More importantly, I feel great and the compliments my wife and I have received have been special as well.

I started this article by talking about my health issues, something I have in common with millions of Americans who eat the typical American diet. The amazing thing about the NutriMost program is not the weight loss (although it is pretty cool the speed at which you lose the fat).  It’s the positive side effects that have come with losing 30 lbs.

To begin with, my blood pressure is now down in the normal range at 120 over 77 (down about 25 points). All of the joint pain (back, neck, elbows, knees etc.…) have diminished to almost unnoticeable levels. My ankle pain, which was showing no improvement after a year, is now hardly noticeable and almost completely healed. I have also noticed several other positive health effects, even though they were not expected. For one, I sleep much better. My wife appreciates that I also don’t snore at all as well! My energy is up as is my sex drive and desire have increased as well (my wife is happy about that too).

Unlike other weight loss programs, this system provides lots of motivation. Almost every time you step on the scale you see significant progress. Every other program I have tried; it takes several days if not weeks to see significant results. With this program you eat real foods that are healthy. In fact, there were days I could not eat it all. I have learned to prepare lots of healthy alternatives to junk foods to give me energy and satisfy my appetite. I have learned that there are lots of healthy choices and foods that I like which are actually good for me. This program provides a large list of healthy foods that march your individual chemistry. You will like the foods in the list and you have lots of choices. On top of that they are cost effective as well because you eat and enjoy them.

See is beliving. I'm a believer!

I have had some fun shopping for new clothes and appreciate all the compliments, friends, family and coworkers have given me. If anyone were to ask me if I would do it again, my answer is a definite yes. If they ask me if I think it was worth it, my answer is an absolute yes, it’s worth every penny. My health is one of the things I hold most dear. I love being active and NutriMost has made a big improvement in my health and the quality of my life. My metabolic age went from 75 to 49 and I feel great (by the way I am 61 years old).

On top of all that, the way Dr. Thomas and his staff educate you with regard to what puts you in fat burning mode (verses what puts you in fat storage mode) is wonderful. Their training and advice has made it much easier to keep the weight off. No yo-yo dieting here.

If you are committed to improving your health by losing 20 to 40 lbs., Dr. Thomas and the NutriMost system can make that happen. They can make a huge positive impact on your life. If you feel your health is one of the most valuable parts of your life, then know that this program will allow you to improve it.  I can recommend this program to anyone that is 20 lbs. over weight. It is fast, highly motivating and you can keep the weight off as well. If you're skeptical, make an appointment to talk to Dr. Thomas. Read the hundreds of testimonials, watch their many video testimonials, talk to a few of the people who have actually gone through the program and you will be convinced to get started. Make a choice for a healthier you. You only get one round in life, there is no timeout. This is the big one. Make your life and your health count for you.

That’s my opinion, I look forward to reading yours.

The heat is on. Can you say dehydration?

By Dr. Jon Thomas, DC, PSc.D, Board Certified Chiropractic Physician.

Did you know that May 27th was National Heat Awareness Day? Heat is one of the leading weather-related killers in the United States. The National Weather Service asks people to think about the heat on National Heat Awareness Day, which is observed each year on the last Friday in May. That coincides with Memorial Day weekend, a weekend when many Americans start spending more time out in the sun.

One of the biggest problems people have in hot weather is staying properly hydrated. Maintaining the proper fluid level in our bodies is just as important as keeping the radiator in your car topped off. Actually, since dehydration can lead to serious illness or death, it’s more important.

In a Fitness Magazine article titled, The Ultimate Energy Drink: How to Stay Hydrated, Stephanie Dolgoff writes, "Water protects and hydrates our organs, transports nutrients to our cells and helps us stay energized and mentally sharp. It also balances the level of electrolytes and minerals such as sodium and potassium in our bodies to keep our muscles functioning properly.”

Dehydration occurs when the loss of body fluids is greater than the amount of water being taken in. More water is moving out of our cells and bodies than what we consume. Florida gets hotter than many other parts of the country. That makes it especially important to take precautions. When the heat is on, be sure to stay hydrated, avoid alcohol and caffeine, and avoid overexertion. Some days it’s much better to stay in a cool space than it is to be outside in the heat.

Prevention
When it comes to dehydration, a fluid ounce of prevention is worth a gallon of cure. If you’re not careful, dehydration can sneak up on you very quickly, especially in places with hot and humid summer climates like Northeast Florida. Pay attention to the environment and try to anticipate situations where you may need to increase your fluid intake.

For example, if you’re going out on a kayak or canoe, take extra water in case your excursion takes a little longer than anticipated. If you’re working in the yard on a hot day, take breaks at regular intervals and drink water during your breaks. Don’t wait till you begin to get thirsty. If you do, you’ll already be well on your way to becoming dehydrated. Dehydration starts when body fluids go down by just one percent. However, people don’t even get thirsty till their fluids go down two percent. Here are some additional tips.

  • Pay close attention to weather reports and avoid exercising and working outside on very hot days or during the hottest parts of the day.
  • Plan strenuous outdoor activities for early in the day or late in the day when the temperature is cooler.
  • Avoid alcohol. Alcohol increases water loss and even impairs your ability to sense the earliest signs of dehydration.
  • If you have to be outdoors when it is very hot, wear light-colored and loose-fitting clothing. And keep a bottle of water nearby.

Symptoms of Dehydration

The symptoms of dehydration range from minor to severe. They include:

  • Increased thirst. Don’t ignore thirst. Get some water or a sports drink.
  • Dry mouth, which is also referred to as cotton mouth.
  • Weakness, dizziness, palpitations, confusion, fainting.
  • The color of urine can be a reliable indicator of dehydration. According to DripDrop, clear or light yellow urine is normal. When urine is darker orange, it’s a sign that the body is running low on water.

How much water should a person drink every day?

In the not-so-distant past, the so-called rule of thumb for recommended water consumption was one size fits all: eight 8-ounce glasses of water per day. That has changed. Obviously, a large person needs more water than a smaller person. Also, a person who is active outside in a hot climate for much of the day will need more water than a person who sits in an air-conditioned office all day.

Courtesy Wikimedia Commons
According to WEBMD, people should drink between half an ounce and an ounce of water per day for each pound they weigh. For example, a person who weighs 150 pounds should consume between 75 to 150 ounces of water a day depending on there activity level. Someone living in a hot climate would want to take in about 150 ounces per day. Someone in a cooler climate might need less than 100 ounces per day.

A person who calculates that he or she is drinking a lot less than the recommended amount per day should develop a plan for ramping up the quantity. It’s not a good idea to try to double the amount of water being consumed overnight. The increase in intake should be made more gradually so that the body can adjust accordingly.

Drinking fluids isn’t the only way to stay hydrated.

In an article for Daily Burn, Emily Faherty writes about foods that can help people in their efforts to stay hydrated. It’s no coincidence that watermelon has water in its name. Watermelon is 92 percent water and it does a nice job of quenching thirst. Watermelon also contains salt, calcium, and magnesium making it ideal for helping with hydration.

Celery stalks are about 95 percent water. Celery also has fiber and minerals, including potassium and vitamin K. Cucumbers, which are 96 percent water, can also help you to keep your cool in the heat. Strawberries are 92 percent water and they are loaded with fiber and vitamin C. Lettuce and spinach also have high percentages of water.

Working these foods into your diet will help you to maintain the proper fluid levels.

Self-treatment for mild dehydration

Mild dehydration can normally be corrected by consuming fluids. That doesn’t mean chugging down lots of water. Here are a few suggestions on how to take in fluids slowly to bring your levels up to where they should be:

  • Sip small amounts of water.
  • Drink carbohydrate/electrolyte-containing drinks. Sports drinks like Gatorade are good for this.
  • Add Lemon to your water to aid with cellular absorption, this will also help with your body’s alkalinity.

It’s very important to stay properly hydrated in hot weather. Maintaining an awareness of the environment around you and planning for situations where your body may need more water than normal is one of the keys to avoiding dehydration. Staying in tune with what’s going on in your own body is the other key. Taking appropriate steps to avoid dehydration and taking action quickly when symptoms present themselves will help you to maintain the balance your body needs and enjoy the summer in spite of the searing heat.

Testimonials: How Chiropractic Treatment at Vibrant Life Health Center has helped people.

By Dr. Jon Thomas, DC, PSc.D, Board Certified Chiropractic Physician.

Many people think Chiropractic primarily deals with back pain, and Chiropractic does have a lot to do with the spine and any problems with the spine. What people don’t always realize is that every other part of the body is connected, either directly or indirectly, to the spine. Because of that, a misalignment in the spine can cause pain and other problems elsewhere in the body.

For example, a pinched nerve in the lower back can produce shooting pain through the leg all the way down to the foot. That’s called sciatica. Also, problems elsewhere in the body can result in back problems. If the hips or legs are out of balance and alignment, that may throw the spine and the entire skeletal system out of alignment resulting in pain and functional abnormalities. Finally, even though headaches may not seem to be associated with the spine, problems with the spine can certainly cause headaches.

Courtesy of Vibrant Life
As I’ve written in a previous blog post, Chiropractic health is much more than simply having a straight, healthy spine. Facets of Chiropractic health include optimal extremity (legs and arms) function and performance, balance, energy, pain reduction or elimination, nutrition, brain and organ function, muscle performance and development, and more. A Chiropractor understands how all the parts work together and can diagnose and treat the root causes of recurring pain in the spine as well as the extremities. A good Chiropractor addresses how the body is functioning.

As a practitioner, it’s exciting for me to see the changes that people experience as they get treatment and as they get their lives restored. Sometimes it’s a person who comes to my office in a lot of pain and leaves the office with a lot less pain. Sometimes it’s a guy who works in construction getting his range of motion back and being able to go back to work after a shoulder injury. Sometimes it’s a woman who has severe recurrent headaches which are reduced or go away entirely after treatments.

In many cases, patients are able to get a good night’s sleep after months of being able to sleep for only a few hours per night due to pain.  Chiropractic can be tremendously helpful, but people don’t have to take my word for that. Read and watch these inspiring testimonials from patients who found that chiropractic relieved their pain and also helped them to get their lives back.

Jeff found that Chiropractic helped after a serious shoulder injury.

“About two years ago, I had a bad accident where I fell into a pool that was empty. I was laid up for about four months. I went to the hospital and they checked for any breaks. I must have had twenty X-Rays up and down, but they didn’t see any conclusive evidence of a problem. Due to the constant pain I was only getting a few hours of sleep per night.

“I do a lot of construction work. For four or five months I was not able to get around and work the way I used to. My income was jeopardized to the point that my wife and I started looking into moving and making other significant changes in our lives. It was all because I had a condition called frozen shoulder. The doctor I was seeing wanted to do surgery and I was open to the idea, but I wasn’t really sure about it.

“My wife heard about Dr. Thomas through one of her friends, and I made an appointment. When he met me he asked what the problem was. I told him I could only move my arm about three inches out from my side. After my first treatment, I was able to move my arm out about three times further. After two months of treatments from Dr. Thomas, I had full range of motion in that arm. I’m back at work, climbing on roofs, climbing on fences, and climbing under houses. If it hadn’t been for Dr. Thomas, I don’t know what I would have done. I would have had to figure out what I could do left-handed.”

Lola got relief from headaches through Chiropractic treatments. Then she lost 25 pounds on NutriMost.

“I was having severe headaches four times a week during the day and during the night. After I became a patient of Dr. Thomas, the frequency and severity of the headaches started going down. After three months of treatments, my headaches were reduced by about 80 percent. I was very satisfied with the services provided to me. The communications with Dr. Thomas and the staff were very good and I was able to get appointments that fit into my schedule. I decided to go on the NutriMost program and I lost about twenty-five pounds. While I was losing weight on NutriMost, my headaches were also going away. I rarely get headaches now, but I keep coming for Chiropractic treatments because once in a while I need an adjustment.”

Michael found relief through Chiropractic after a car accident injured his neck.

“I came to Vibrant Life after I was in a car accident. Dr. Thomas and his staff were very helpful and accommodating. Dr. Thomas has positively made a difference in my neck. I have a lot less pain and a lot more mobility since I started receiving treatment. I’m feeling much better.”
