Abby lost over 30 pounds on NutriMost!

By Dr. Jon Thomas, DC, PSc.D, Board Certified Chiropractic Physician.
Another NutriMost Success Story! Abby went from a size 12 to a size 6.
Abby came to us in January ready to make some changes in her life! She specifically wanted to change the direction her health was going in. Six months after beginning the NutriMost plan, Abby is thriving. She feels great, she looks great, and she has truly transformed her life! Check out her story below and on the First Coast Living video.
---
"Nutrimost was a gift that I gave to myself. After eighteen years of raising my two children and seventeen years of taking care of my parents in my home, it was time for me to do something special for me. I started in January this year. At the end of forty days, I had taken off 22 pounds. Then I did the NutriMost reset and took off another 12 pounds. My old clothes are in the garage and I'll be selling them at a garage sale.
"I'm an executive business coach, and I believe that if you want to be great at anything, you need the help of a coach. If you want to achieve tremendous results, you need someone to hold you accountable. In this case, Dr. Thomas was my health and maintenance coach. I was texting my weight to Dr. Thomas every day, and I didn't want to give him a bad number. That's one of the reasons I really stuck with the plan.
"There were challenging days, like one day when I was in South America and couldn't even read the menu at a restaurant. We texted back and forth and Dr. Thomas gave me a helpful suggestion on what to select. Before getting on NutriMost, I didn't prepare meals at home very often. I frequently ate out for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. That's one of the reasons my weight was where it was.
"One of the initial challenges I had with NutriMost was getting my portions right, learning that my limit for meat was equal to the size of my hand. I cooked a lot with my George Foreman Grill. Once I had everything in place, it was not difficult to stick with the program. I've learned about portion control. I've also learned that you can cheat from time to time, but you have to get right back with the program the next day."

Life in Balance Tip: Fresh and local produce is the best.
One of the nice things about living in Northeast Florida is that we’re in a region with an excellent climate for growing a wide variety of produce. When we go to a place like the local farmers' markets at the Arts' Walk, or on Beaver Street, or even the produce sections at flea markets, we can purchase lots of nutritious food that's very fresh and has no preservatives. Also, we can find fresh local produce throughout the year. In other parts of the country, there are times of the year when practically nothing edible can be grown.
Courtesy of Wikipedia
When you get foods that are fresh and have no preservatives, you get food that nutritionally will give you more of a life in balance. Fresh produce is tastiest when it's "in season." Also, when produce is in season, there's normally lots of it. That actually keeps the pricing down. So, when fresh produce is at its best, it's also frequently available at its lowest price. For example, when watermelons are at their juiciest and tastiest, like they are right now, they also tend to be priced low because there are plenty of them.
At a farmers' market, you can actually talk to the people who grow the food and ask them how they do it. Those conversations can be very interesting and illuminating. At the Riverside Arts' Walk, you can even get a calendar which shows what is in season from month to month. That information will help you to plan meals that are both nutritious and delicious.
The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services has a website called Fresh From Florida, which makes the case for buying local. It also has information on what's in season from month to month. Weather conditions and other factors may shift the seasons a bit for any crop. Still, the experts have a pretty good idea of what grows and when.
So what's in season right now? Avocado, Watermelon, Mushrooms, Passion Fruit, Mango, Lychee, Carambola, Guava, Longan, Peanut
Many foods in the list above will continue to be available through August. If you’ve never tried these foods, I encourage you to do so. When you get adventurous with food, you sometimes find new things that you and/or members of your family really enjoy. Here are a few additional resources for information about the benefits of buying locally grown produce.

This article features the personal testimony of Abby, a woman who lost over 30 pounds on the NutriMost program. I have also discussed the benefits of eating produce that is grown in our region.

Life in Balance: Taking Health to the Next Level

Many people’s lives have been transformed over the years at Vibrant Life Health Center. We’ve had Chiropractic patients come to us with chronic pain and musculoskeletal issues that have been resolved. The transformations they’ve experienced have enabled them to return to doing things that they thought they might never be able to do again.

We’ve had patients who had serious weight problems, problems with their metabolism, and things that just weren’t working properly in their bodies.  People want to know how they can get to the next level. At Vibrant Life, we’re going to help them to do exactly that. We call it Life in Balance, and it’s a comprehensive approach to optimized health, fitness, and wellness.

Life in Balance will incorporate wellness Chiropractic. Lots of people associate chiropractic with getting well after an injury of some sort, and chiropractic is certainly great for that. The thing many people don’t realize is that Chiropractic is also good for staying well and for keeping the nervous system functioning optimally. As I’ve mentioned in previous blog posts, everything in the body is connected to the spine. Spine health is crucial for living a truly healthy life.

The program will also encompass nutritional guidance so people won’t have to guess about what supplement to take and when or how to take it. With blood-based micro - macro nutrient testing, we’re going to show people what their bodies are truly deficient in and what is optimal. People are going to have an exact plan on what supplements they should be taking in order to address their specific deficiencies based on testing and then also re-testing post protocol to verify that the needs have been fully addressed.

Another misunderstood and misused concept in health planning is detoxification steps. There are many methods related to detoxification but many are actually not effective, not safe, and confusing. The protocols in Life in Balance come from some of the longest used methods in history. Not only will you have the steps laid out for you, you will have a specific order by organ and when to cycle on and off the detoxification protocols. This will ensure that your body will get maximum benefit!

Foods are also pivotal to health and wellness. With Life in Balance a food plan is developed using biofeedback to ensure cellular coherence with the foods you consume. This plan is comprehensive and lists good foods, avoidance foods, and a buffer in between. Within this plan you're not guessing…you know that you know that your food plan matches your body's needs.

Fitness is another key component for Life in Balance. Someone might want to get to the point where he or she can walk a mile at a good pace without huffing and puffing. Someone else might want to gain muscle mass and get the six-pack abs they had in their 20s back. Either way, we’re going to help participants reach their fitness objectives.

Life in Balance is not a one-size-fits-all program. It’s comprehensive and tailored to the individual. A supplement that works well for one person might not work at all for someone else. There are reasons for that. Everybody is different and everybody has their own unique needs. We’ll be using the best technologies and time-tested methodologies to develop an individualized program for each participant.

This is an in depth approach to optimal health. We’re going to look at everything going on in a person’s body and we’re going to address every challenge that might keep a person from reaching his or her goals. We want to give our patients much more than one or two pieces to the health and fitness puzzle. We want to give them all the pieces and then help them fit those pieces together so they can experience true transformation and start living the lives they’ve always wanted to live.

How my daughter, Avery, got her hair back: A personal Life in Balance testimony from Dr. Thomas

According to WebMD, alopecia areata is a type of hair loss that occurs when your immune system mistakenly attacks hair follicles, which is where hair growth begins. The damage to the follicle is usually not permanent. Experts do not know why the immune system attacks the follicles. Alopecia areata is most common in people younger than 20, but children and adults of any age may be affected. Women and men are affected equally.

My daughter, Avery, was diagnosed with alopecia at 5 years old. Tracy and I took Avery to several medical Doctors. They told us that she had an auto-immune disease, and there was nothing that could be done about it. Avery was told she would never have hair again. That news was devastating! Most people consider hair an important part of their personal appearance. It’s especially important to young women in our culture.

A friend recommended that we take Avery to a Naturopathic doctor who thought outside the box.  He tested Avery’s blood, urine, and saliva. After evaluating the results, he determined that Avery’s body was not producing HCL and her stomach PH level was an 8 when it should have been a 2. Based on that information, which traditional medical doctors had not considered, we made some changes. Today Avery is thirteen years old and she has a beautiful head of hair. That creates a whole other problem for a father, but I think I’ll be able to cope.

Traditional medicine does not have the answers to every health challenge. Sometimes, people need do their own research and seek out a practitioner who thinks outside the traditional medicine box. With Life in Balance, when patients have a problem for which there doesn’t seem to be a solution, we’re going to consider all the options, including some that may be considered outside the box.

Manny Lost 50 Pounds on NutriMost! He also got his health back!

By Dr. Jon Thomas, DC, PSc.D, Board Certified Chiropractic Physician.

Manny weighed 280 pounds when he started on NutriMost. His cholesterol and blood pressure were high. He lost 44 lbs in 40 days and continued to lose weight after that. While losing fifty pounds overall, Manny also saw big improvements on cholesterol and blood pressure. He also stopped snoring. Here’s what he had to say about NutriMost.

“I wanted to get back on track. However, I was nervous about starting the program. I kept it to myself and didn’t even tell my family about it. Once I knew that it was actually working, I really took off with it. I’ve learned what works for me and what does not. For example, I thought walnuts were a healthy snack, but I found out that they don’t work well for me. I also found out that I can eat pizza, and that does work well for me. So, I can’t complain. Learning about what works and what doesn’t has been awesome.
“Communications with Dr. Thomas were very important. In the first two weeks, I was having lots of doubts about the program and lots of cravings. Dr. Thomas was with me every step of the way. I’ve been through lots of other programs. I’ve been in programs that involved group meetings, online check-ins, pills, and none of those programs worked for me. Dr. Thomas was able to show me exactly what would work for me. He was also very encouraging. I now have energy, day and night. On my fifth day in the program, I stopped snoring. My lady loved that.”

There’s more to NutriMost than just losing weight.
For many people, losing weight is a health priority. It’s a well-known fact that getting to a healthy weight and maintaining it does much more than simply improve a person’s appearance. Manny was having serious problems with his cholesterol and blood pressure. As he lost the weight, those two items changed. Many people experience other health benefits when they lose weight the right way with NutriMost.
Hector lost 29 pounds in 40 days and continued to lose 4 more lbs by the end of the program. He also has had significant improvements in his liver
health, an area where he has been having issues since he was diagnosed with hepatitis and treated unsuccessfully for it at twenty years old. Over the next several decades of his life, he received many treatments for hepatitis. Some of them were experimental. Tests showed that the hepatitis was gone after the treatments he received. However, the hepatitis always returned.
At the age of 45, he had a biopsy and he was diagnosed with stage two hepatic fibrosis, fibrosis of the liver. The National Institutes for Health define hepatic fibrosis as follows: “Liver fibrosis is the excessive accumulation of extracellular matrix proteins including collagen that occurs in most types of chronic liver diseases. Advanced liver fibrosis results in cirrhosis, liver failure, and portal hypertension and often requires liver transplantation.”
It’s a very serious condition and one that doctors say is irreversible. After losing weight on NutriMost, Hector wanted to look into new treatments for his liver. He got a state-of-the-art MRI, which showed “zero fibrosis” and negligible fat in his liver. Weight loss allows the liver to repair itself. He still has hepatitis, but very few symptoms and no liver damage per say. When the liver is working properly, it reduces the presence of toxins in the body. Hector found out that losing weight the right way can produce very positive health results.
Additional Benefits of Losing Weight
Heart Attacks: Plaque buildup can result in narrowed arteries. During a heart attack, the coronary artery becomes completely blocked. This cuts off the oxygen that your heart needs to continue to function. Losing weight can significantly reduce the risk of heart attack. The more you lose, the more you reduce your risk.
Cancer: Obesity increases the risk of getting cancer. The risk of getting certain types of cancers is significantly reduced when a person loses weight. This is particularly true for breast and uterine cancer.
Dementia: Many Americans have too much visceral fat. That’s the abdominal fat that surrounds internal organs. Visceral fat releases chemicals that cause inflammation. Inflammation can lead to memory loss, and it can ultimately increase the risk of dementia. Reducing visceral fat reduces the risk.
Sleep Apnea: When people become overweight, extra tissue thickens the windpipe wall and narrows the airway. This creates a dangerous condition in which a person stops taking in enough oxygen while sleeping. Losing weight can widen the windpipe and help people sleep through the night.
Arthritis and Joint Pain: Extra weight puts a tremendous strain on the joints. Losing weight reduces the pressure on joints. As people lose weight, the cushioning between bones builds back up and they become more comfortable moving around.
Diabetes: People who are overweight are at risk for developing diabetes. Excess weight reduces the cells’ sensitivity to insulin. Insulin is the hormone that regulates the movement of sugar into your cells. Losing weight reduces the risk of diabetes.
The health issues I’ve been writing about should be enough to motivate most people to lose their excess weight. However, there are several other factors that could be considered bonuses for losing weight.
For example, as a person’s overall health improves, the need for expensive prescription medications is reduced and sometimes eliminated completely. That’s a bonus, you can feel where it counts – right in the wallet.
Another important bonus is that people feel more energetic when they’re not lugging an extra 20 to 40 pounds around. When people lose weight and get health conditions under control, they feel better.
A closely related benefit of losing weight and becoming healthier is an improved sex drive. A person’s sex drive can be dramatically affected by prescription drugs, high blood pressure, diabetes, and other conditions related to excess weight. For most people, better health and more energy equate to an improved sex life.

Independence from Pain through Chiropractic

By Dr. Jon Thomas, DC, PSc.D, Board Certified Chiropractic Physician.

The beginning of July is a time when Americans reflect on the many freedoms they enjoy, freedoms that people in other nations may not have. As Americans, we are very fortunate to have the freedoms we have, and we should never take them for granted. With that in mind, I’d like to wish a very Happy Fourth of July to all the patients to whom we provide services at Vibrant Life Health Center. The same goes for our employees and all of our business associates.
Freedom from Pain
One freedom that has not yet been added to the Bill of Rights is the right to live free of pain. Perhaps, someday in the not-so-distant future, our political leaders will recognize the deep-seated need many people have to be free of pain. I’m just kidding. The government, unfortunately, can’t guarantee freedom from pain.
One of the things that really can help with pain is Chiropractic treatment. Chiropractic has proven to be effective for providing relief from pain in virtually every part of the body, including:
  • Lower back, middle back, and upper back
  • Shoulders
  • Neck
  • Elbows
  • Wrists
  • Knees
  • Ankles
  • Hips
  • Elbows
Many patients suffer from pain for a long time before seeking treatment of any kind. Some think that whatever is ailing them will eventually get better over time. Some think that if they’re patient enough and “tough it out” the pain will go away. Some have tried traditional medicine, including painkillers which can be highly addictive, and they just don’t think that anything will work for them. Since nothing has worked for them, they think that nothing ever will work for them.
Some people have suffered from pain for so long they no longer remember what it’s like to not be in pain. It’s hard to believe, but some people do live that way. The good news is that you don’t have to live that way. Relief is available! After receiving their first adjustment from a trained Chiropractor, many people can hardly believe the level of relief they experience. Most wish they had gotten Chiropractic treatment much, much sooner.

A Short History of Chiropractic
According to the American Chiropractic Association, the word ‘Chiropractic’ comes from the Greek words cheir (meaning ‘hand’) and praktos (meaning ‘done’). In essence, it means “done by hand.” The name was chosen by Daniel David Palmer, the developer of Chiropractic.
Palmer recognized that various forms of manipulation had been used for hundreds, if not thousands, of years. However, no one had ever codified a philosophical or scientific rationale to explain the effects of spinal manipulations. Palmer’s primary contribution to the health field was the art and science of Chiropractic, which was based on his study of anatomy and physiology.
In September 1895, Palmer examined a janitor who had become deaf 17 years earlier after he felt a change in his back. Palmer examined the area and gave an “adjustment” to what he believed to be a misplaced vertebra in the upper back. The janitor’s hearing improved.
DD Palmer continued to develop the practice of Chiropractic. In 1897, he established the Palmer School of Cure, which is now known as the Palmer College of Chiropractic, in Davenport, Iowa. Many people became interested in Palmer’s new healing art. Kansas became the first state to license Chiropractors in 1913.
By 1931, thirty-nine states had given chiropractors legal recognition. Today, all 50 states recognize Chiropractic as a health care profession. Many other countries also recognize and regulate Chiropractic, including Canada, Mexico, Great Britain, Australia, Japan and Switzerland.
How does Chiropractic Treatment relieve pain?
Courtesy of Vibrant Life
A great deal of the pain human beings experience is due to some part of their body being out of proper alignment. Like the front end of a car, body parts have to be properly aligned to function correctly. This is especially true of the spine, which is the part of the body to which all the other parts are attached. Chiropractors refer to misalignments of the spine as subluxations. A subluxation can affect nerves. When that happens there may be pain right at the subluxation point as well as other areas of the body connected by nerves to that spot.
Spinal manipulation differentiates Chiropractic treatment from other medical practices. Chiropractors are highly trained to perform adjustments to bring the spine into proper alignment. There are several techniques. The more techniques a Chiropractor masters, the more tools he or she has at his or her disposal to help patients. This enables the practitioner to choose the technique which will best address whatever problem a patient is having and to do so in a way that is most comfortable for the patient. For example, I have been trained in numerous techniques, including the following:
The Cox® Technique, a non-surgical, doctor-controlled, hands on spinal manipulation performed with the patient lying on The Cox® Table.
Extremities Techniques optimize function and performance, balance, energy, muscle performance and development, and more.
The Thompson Technique utilizes a “Segmental Drop Table” to enhance the motion force imparted towards the segment or area to be adjusted.
Activator Technique involves low force and high speed activation of the skeletal structure. This technique incorporates the latest advances in orthopedic, neurological, and Chiropractic science.
Diversified Technique is the most commonly used adjustment technique by chiropractors. Like many Chiropractic and osteopathic manipulative techniques, Diversified is characterized by a high-velocity, low-amplitude thrust.
FAKTR is a technique for treating soft tissue problems. It is effective for many conditions, ranging from headaches, back pain, shoulder problems, pain in the elbows, pain in the feet, and pain in just about any part of the body.
Neuromuscular Re-Education is a “stand-alone” hands-on technique/approach to the evaluation and functional treatment of soft tissue injuries.
Electrical Stimulation Therapy uses an electrical current to cause a single muscle or a group of muscles to contract. Contracting the muscle via electrical stimulation helps strengthen the affected muscle.
Active Tissue Therapy applies tension to injured tissue while it is in active motion. This allows us to break down scar tissue and improve healing, function, and strength.
As you can see, Chiropractic is used for much more than low back pain. Chiropractic is also very effective for addressing pain in the extremities. Also, since many headaches are actually the result of misalignments of the spine, including the neck area, Chiropractic is very effective for treating headaches as well.
Since every part of the body is connected to the spine, Chiropractic can also be very effective for addressing problems in other parts of the body, parts of the body many people would not normally associate with the back. For example, some gastrointestinal problems are the result of subluxations which are affecting the nerves leading to the GI tract. Efforts to treat some GI problems without addressing associated nerve problems aren’t likely to produce the desired results.
If you are suffering with pain in any part of your body, and especially if you’ve been in pain for a long time, I urge you to look into Chiropractic treatment. Pain that is left untreated can affect every minute of every day. Pain can also keep a person from getting a good night’s sleep. Chiropractic can provide relief, in many cases instant relief. Even if you’ve tried Chiropractic without getting a positive result, you may want to look into it again. Different techniques produce different outcomes. Also, as with other professions, some doctors are better at what they do than others.
---
In this article, I have discussed a very short history of Chiropractic and how Chiropractic gives people freedom from pain. I’ve listed many, but not all, of the techniques I use with patients. I’ve also discussed the fact that Chiropractic is effective for treating problems in parts of the body other than the back.
