Healthy for the Holidays

It’s the holiday season and with all the food, smells, and activitiy of the season it is difficult to stay on track to maintaining a healthy approach to the festivities. Just because it’s the holiday season doesn’t mean you should lose sight of the goals you have set for your health and fitness. In fact this is the perfect time to get on track and start before the New Year’s Resolutions buzz through the air!
One other challenge people face during the holidays is injuring or exacerbating old injuries by taking up all the physical activities of the season. Many people travel and between the different chairs and beds end up sore and in pain. Also, it can be hard to find the time to get your adjustments in. It’s a great time to make sure that you have set up the month’s Chiropractic adjustment schedule to address the added stress and strain to your body!

What is a Tytron Scan?

When people go to the doctor, one of the first things that happens is that a nurse or an assistant takes their temperature. Usually they use a disposable thermometer under the tongue. Medical professionals know the importance of body temperature.
Chiropractors know that there is also excellent information to be found by looking at temperatures all over the body. They know that wherever there is a hot spot or a cool spot, there could be a problem.
All of the organs in a human body are controlled by the Central Nervous System. Nerves run from the brain and down the spinal column. From there, they innervate various organs throughout the body, including the heart, the lungs, and the skin. Each of the nerves leaving the spinal column innervates specific areas of the skin.
Normally there is symmetry in skin temperature. By symmetry, I mean that the temperature on one side of the spine should be the same temperature as the temperature directly on the other side of the spine. However, when there is interference in a nerve, it throws the body’s temperature symmetry out of balance.



Monitoring the spine for differences in temperature is one of the ways that Chiropractors can get to the root of a patient’s problem. Chiropractors refer to misalignments of the spine as subluxations. Subluxations cause interferences in the nerves. By locating temperature differences around the spine, a chiropractor can determine where a misalignment is causing interference. Once located, a misalignment can be corrected.
When the temperature on one side of the spine is the same as the temperature on the other side all the way down the spine, it indicates that the body is in balance and that the nervous system is functioning the way it should. Before instrumentation was developed to measure differences in skin temperature, Chiropractors would slowly run the back of their hands down a patient’s back to locate hot spots along the spine.  That was the hands-on approach.

B.J. Palmer is known as the developer of modern Chiropractic. He was the founder of Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa. Palmer understood the significance of temperature symmetry.  In the 1920s an engineer named Dossa Evins worked with Palmer to develop an instrument for recording skin temperatures along the spine. Instruments for measuring skin temperature have been evolving ever since.
Titronics Research & Development Co. is the world’s leading manufacturer of precision instrumentation used by Chiropractors. The founder of the company was Roger Titon, an engineer. One of the early devices that his company developed was used in construction for gluing plywood together. Temperature measurements were very important in that process.
Titon realized that his technology, which could measure temperatures very accurately while moving along a surface, could be used for purposes other than construction. Earlier in his career, he had worked in the Orthopedics department at a hospital. He had an ongoing interest in healthcare and inquired of people as to what types of doctors were most interested in very accurate temperature measurements.
Up to that time, he knew nothing about Chiropractic. He talked to Chiropractors and determined that there was indeed a need for a good instrument for measuring temperatures. Around the same time, he hurt his own back while working on a car, and he made his first visit to a Chiropractor as a patient.  Necessity truly is the mother of invention! Roger Titon needed Chiropractic and Chiropractors needed better devices for measuring temperatures.
In 1985, Titronics introduced the C-2000, the first such instrument with infrared scanners. It recorded the temperature on both sides of the spine while being moved along the spine. It also had a measuring wheel which recorded where along the spine the temperatures were taken. It was a big step forward from the hands-on approach I mentioned above.
Since then, there have been many advances which have increased the accuracy and usefulness of Tytron scanners.

The Tytron records the temperature on both sides of the spine as a Chiropractor moves it up the back. It is a tremendously useful instrument for locating the spots where the temperatures are not in symmetry. It can be used to locate temperature differences all the way up or down the spine, or it can be used to focus on a single area like the cervical spine.
With the Tytron scanner, there are no needles and there is no cutting. It’s completely painless. There’s no laying down on a cold flat table. There is no need to try to remain motionless for long periods of time as there is with an MRI. Nor is there any claustrophobia or unsettling noise. With Tytron technology, a Chiropractor can scan the entire spine in less than a minute.
At Vibrant Life Health Center, I use a C-5000 to get a better understanding of my patients’ issues. With the images produced by the Tytron scanner, I can get a picture of where the interferences are in a patient’s body.  The image is also an excellent tool for showing patients a picture of what’s going on in various parts of their bodies.
Another benefit of the Tytron system is that the graphs, taken over time, can be overlaid on each other. This presents a picture of what’s going on in a patient’s body not only in the present, but over a period of years. This is extremely useful information to practitioners as they endeavor to help their patients toward health and wellness.

What is Labor Day All about?

Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It is an annual national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.
According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the first Labor Day holiday was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City. In 1884, Labor Day was celebrated in New York on the first Monday in September. The idea of a holiday for workers spread rapidly to other cities and states. Labor organizations played a big part in that.  
By 1885, Labor Day was celebrated in many industrial centers throughout the United States. On June 28, 1894, Congress passed an act making Labor Day a legal holiday.
Common Workplace Injuries
Work gives people a sense of purpose and fulfillment. For most people, work is a major part of life. Unfortunately, work can sometimes lead to injuries. Here are some of the most common causes of workplace injuries:
Overexertion: Lifting, pulling, pushing, reaching, holding, and carrying, can all cause serious injuries, especially when a person is attempting to work with something that’s simply too heavy to easily lift. Overexertion is the number one cause of workplace injuries. If an object is too heavy or awkward, or the person lifts with the back as opposed to the legs, injury can result.
Slips and falls: Although slip and falls can frequently be avoided, slips and trips they are the number two cause of workplace injuries. Falls on wet and slippery floors or tripping over an object causes many serious injuries every day. One of the best ways to avoid slips and falls is to simply pay attention to the potential hazards in the workplace. (This is hard to do if your nose is constantly buried in your smartphone)

Repetitive Motion: Repetitive motions such as typing and using a computer for most of the day can strain muscles and tendons. This can lead to back pain, neck pain, shoulder pain, and carpal tunnel syndrome. Setting up a workspace that’s ergonomically correct can reduce the incidence of this type of injury. Getting up from the chair and stretching for a few minutes each hour can also help.  Raising a computer monitor to a higher position can also help.
Vehicle Accidents:  When car accidents happen, people usually get hurt. Workers who drive as part of their jobs are on the road more than others so they are statistically more likely to be involved in car accidents. Distracted driving due to texting and other activities cause many car accidents. When driving, it’s very important to focus completely on driving.
Falling Objects: Head and neck injuries are a common result of falling objects in the workplace. That’s why hard hats are required at construction sites. It’s important to be aware of areas where things may be prone to falling. As much as possible, it’s a good idea to avoid standing in spots where things might fall.
Falling from High Places: Falling from a roof, a ladder, or down a stairway can cause serious injuries. Even a fall from a chair that someone stands on to change a light bulb can cause a serious injury. Paying attention and being careful are the keys to avoiding these injuries.
Walking Into Things: People walk into walls, doors, cabinets, glass, windows, tables, chairs, and other solid objects all the time. Some suffer from knee, neck, and foot injuries. Like other types of injuries, most of these can be avoided simply by paying attention.

A growing body of research shows that the services provided by chiropractic physicians are effective, safe, and cost-effective for many conditions. The following are excerpts from some of the recent research.
“Acute and chronic chiropractic patients experienced better outcomes in pain, functional disability, and patient satisfaction; clinically important differences in pain and disability improvement were found for chronic patients.”Haas et al (2005), Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics
“In our randomized, controlled trial, we compared the effectiveness of manual therapy, physical therapy, and continued care by a general practitioner in patients with nonspecific neck pain. The success rate at seven weeks was twice as high for the manual therapy group (68.3 percent) as for the continued care group (general practitioner). Manual therapy scored better than physical therapy on all outcome measures. Patients receiving manual therapy had fewer absences from work than patients receiving physical therapy or continued care, and manual therapy and physical therapy each resulted in statistically significant less analgesic use than continued care.” Hoving et al (2002), Annals of Internal Medicine
“Chiropractic patients were found to be more satisfied with their back care providers after four weeks of treatment than were medical patients. Results from observational studies suggested that back pain patients are more satisfied with chiropractic care than with medical care. Additionally, studies conclude that patients are more satisfied with chiropractic care than they were with physical therapy after six weeks.”Hertzman-Miller et al (2002), American Journal of Public Health
“Many treatments are available for low back pain. Often exercises and physical therapy can help. Some people benefit from chiropractic therapy or acupuncture.”Goodman et al. (2013), Journal of the American Medical Association
