What is a Tytron Scan?

By Dr. Jon Thomas, DC, PSc.D, Board Certified Chiropractic Physician.

When people go to the doctor, one of the first things that happens is that a nurse or an assistant takes their temperature. Usually they use a disposable thermometer under the tongue. Medical professionals know the importance of body temperature.
Chiropractors know that there is also excellent information to be found by looking at temperatures all over the body. They know that wherever there is a hot spot or a cool spot, there could be a problem.
All of the organs in a human body are controlled by the Central Nervous System. Nerves run from the brain and down the spinal column. From there, they innervate various organs throughout the body, including the heart, the lungs, and the skin. Each of the nerves leaving the spinal column innervates specific areas of the skin.
Normally there is symmetry in skin temperature. By symmetry, I mean that the temperature on one side of the spine should be the same temperature as the temperature directly on the other side of the spine. However, when there is interference in a nerve, it throws the body’s temperature symmetry out of balance.

Monitoring the spine for differences in temperature is one of the ways that Chiropractors can get to the root of a patient’s problem. Chiropractors refer to misalignments of the spine as subluxations. Subluxations cause interferences in the nerves. By locating temperature differences around the spine, a chiropractor can determine where a misalignment is causing interference. Once located, a misalignment can be corrected.
When the temperature on one side of the spine is the same as the temperature on the other side all the way down the spine, it indicates that the body is in balance and that the nervous system is functioning the way it should. Before instrumentation was developed to measure differences in skin temperature, Chiropractors would slowly run the back of their hands down a patient’s back to locate hot spots along the spine.  That was the hands-on approach.
Titronics and the Tytron Scanner
B.J. Palmer,

B.J. Palmer is known as the developer of modern Chiropractic. He was the founder of Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa. Palmer understood the significance of temperature symmetry.  In the 1920s an engineer named Dossa Evins worked with Palmer to develop an instrument for recording skin temperatures along the spine. Instruments for measuring skin temperature have been evolving ever since.
Titronics Research & Development Co. is the world’s leading manufacturer of precision instrumentation used by Chiropractors. The founder of the company was Roger Titon, an engineer. One of the early devices that his company developed was used in construction for gluing plywood together. Temperature measurements were very important in that process.
Titon realized that his technology, which could measure temperatures very accurately while moving along a surface, could be used for purposes other than construction. Earlier in his career, he had worked in the Orthopedics department at a hospital. He had an ongoing interest in healthcare and inquired of people as to what types of doctors were most interested in very accurate temperature measurements.
Up to that time, he knew nothing about Chiropractic. He talked to Chiropractors and determined that there was indeed a need for a good instrument for measuring temperatures. Around the same time, he hurt his own back while working on a car, and he made his first visit to a Chiropractor as a patient.  Necessity truly is the mother of invention! Roger Titon needed Chiropractic and Chiropractors needed better devices for measuring temperatures.
In 1985, Titronics introduced the C-2000, the first such instrument with infrared scanners. It recorded the temperature on both sides of the spine while being moved along the spine. It also had a measuring wheel which recorded where along the spine the temperatures were taken. It was a big step forward from the hands-on approach I mentioned above.
Since then, there have been many advances which have increased the accuracy and usefulness of Tytron scanners.
A Tytron Scan is Non-invasive, Painless, and Fast.

Courtesy of Titronics
The Tytron records the temperature on both sides of the spine as a Chiropractor moves it up the back. It is a tremendously useful instrument for locating the spots where the temperatures are not in symmetry. It can be used to locate temperature differences all the way up or down the spine, or it can be used to focus on a single area like the cervical spine.
With the Tytron scanner, there are no needles and there is no cutting. It’s completely painless. There’s no laying down on a cold flat table. There is no need to try to remain motionless for long periods of time as there is with an MRI. Nor is there any claustrophobia or unsettling noise. With Tytron technology, a Chiropractor can scan the entire spine in less than a minute.
At Vibrant Life Health Center, I use a C-5000 to get a better understanding of my patients’ issues. With the images produced by the Tytron scanner, I can get a picture of where the interferences are in a patient’s body.  The image is also an excellent tool for showing patients a picture of what’s going on in various parts of their bodies.
Another benefit of the Tytron system is that the graphs, taken over time, can be overlaid on each other. This presents a picture of what’s going on in a patient’s body not only in the present, but over a period of years. This is extremely useful information to practitioners as they endeavor to help their patients toward health and wellness.

What does Chiropractic have to do with hurricanes?

By Dr. Jon Thomas, DC, PSc.D, Board Certified Chiropractic Physician.

Courtesy of Free Stock Photos
As residents of Northeast Florida recently discovered, a hurricane can be a major disruption. People try to be as prepared as possible, but there never seems to be enough time to prepare fully. When the storm hits, people hunker down and wonder when the power will go out. After the storm hits, they begin to take steps to clean up and then go on with their lives.
Every step of the way, there is some potential for injury. For example, some families have storm supplies in storage. Getting those supplies out of storage may involve gaining access to attics by ladders and pulling heavy items down from shelves. Reaching and lifting storm supplies, which seem like a routine activity, can lead to injury.
Also, in the preparation phase for a serious storm, people buy supplies like canned foods and bottled water. Cases of bottled water and canned foods are heavy. For someone who doesn’t get much exercise, picking up a case of water can cause a back injury.
Another thing that people purchase in anticipation of power outages are generators. In addition to being very heavy, generators are awkward to lift and carry. Just getting a generator out of a truck or van can cause a back injury.
Wikimedia Commons
Note: When running a generator, it’s very important to read the instructions. Generators produce carbon monoxide, a colorless and odorless gas which can kill a person in minutes. Also, since the exhaust from a generator is hot, it’s very important to make sure that the exhaust isn’t pointed toward anything flammable like wood siding.
During a storm, simply moving around a house can become challenging after the power goes out. Even with a flashlight, you don’t see as well as you would with normal lighting. It’s easy to trip or to bump into things when the lights are out. Another storm hazard involves dealing with high winds outside, which can result in a fall.
The danger isn’t over even after the storm passes by. In the aftermath of a storm, people sometimes hurt their backs, shoulders, and necks. There may be large trees or tree limbs that need to be cut and moved. Cutting wood may involve using the shoulder muscles in ways that most people don’t do very often. Then there’s debris that needs to be hauled to the street. Some of that debris can be heavy and awkward to drag.

How can a Chiropractor help?
Anytime a person has a back, neck, or shoulder injury, the first thing he or she should consider is getting checked out by a qualified Chiropractor. A trained Chiropractor knows that there are different kinds of pain and different ways to deal with pain. For example, pulsating pain is frequently associated with the cardiovascular system. Burning pain is often associated with the nervous system. Dull aching pain is frequently associated with muscles.
A Chiropractor understands the differences and knows the best approach to deal with these different types of pain.  Pain is essentially a signal, like a check engine light in a car. It tells people that something is not right in the body. A Chiropractor will assess the signal and figure out what’s causing the problem. Then he or she can get to the root cause.
The spine houses and protects the nervous system. When there is a misalignment in the spine, it can inhibit communication back and forth with the brain. It doesn’t take much of a misalignment to shut a nerve off. At that point, the brain may not be able to properly control a part of the body.
Through spinal decompression, a Chiropractor can increase the space for nerves to send their signals to the brain. There are no vessels in the disks and without Chiropractic, there is no way to remove toxins from the disks. A Chiropractic adjustment can help to rehydrate and nourish the disks.
Chiropractic is the safest form of healthcare available.
There are several different techniques available for dealing with the pain issues that people have. Whereas one technique may work very well for one person, it may not work well for another person with a similar condition. That’s why it’s good to go to a Chiropractor who has been trained in more than one or two techniques. A Chiropractor who knows six, eight or more techniques obviously has more tools at his disposal than a Chiropractor who only knows one or two techniques.
Developing a relationship with a Chiropractor

Many people wait until they have a serious problem before setting up an appointment with a Chiropractor. There’s really no need to do that. When a person goes to a Chiropractor as a part of a routine health regimen, the Chiropractor becomes familiar with the patient’s issues and concerns. That kind of relationship helps the doctor to address a patient’s problems as they come up.
At Vibrant Life Health Center, we now offer the Life in Balance plan which addresses all the needs of our patients. It incorporates weight loss, nutrition, fitness, Chiropractic, and much more. The Life in Balance plan eliminates the need to go to several practitioners who have different specialties.

How Chiropractic Can Help with Work-Related Injuries

By Dr. Jon Thomas, DC, PSc.D, Board Certified Chiropractic Physician.
What is Labor Day All about?

Courtesy of Wikipedia
Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It is an annual national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.
According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the first Labor Day holiday was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City. In 1884, Labor Day was celebrated in New York on the first Monday in September. The idea of a holiday for workers spread rapidly to other cities and states. Labor organizations played a big part in that.
By 1885, Labor Day was celebrated in many industrial centers throughout the United States. On June 28, 1894, Congress passed an act making Labor Day a legal holiday.
Common Workplace Injuries
Work gives people a sense of purpose and fulfillment. For most people, work is a major part of life. Unfortunately, work can sometimes lead to injuries. Here are some of the most common causes of workplace injuries:
Overexertion: Lifting, pulling, pushing, reaching, holding, and carrying, can all cause serious injuries, especially when a person is attempting to work with something that’s simply too heavy to easily lift. Overexertion is the number one cause of workplace injuries. If an object is too heavy or awkward, or the person lifts with the back as opposed to the legs, injury can result.
Slips and falls: Although slip and falls can frequently be avoided, slips and trips they are the number two cause of workplace injuries. Falls on wet and slippery floors or tripping over an object causes many serious injuries every day. One of the best ways to avoid slips and falls is to simply pay attention to the potential hazards in the workplace. (This is hard to do if your nose is constantly buried in your smartphone)
Courtesy of Wikipedia
Repetitive Motion: Repetitive motions such as typing and using a computer for most of the day can strain muscles and tendons. This can lead to back pain, neck pain, shoulder pain, and carpal tunnel syndrome. Setting up a workspace that’s ergonomically correct can reduce the incidence of this type of injury. Getting up from the chair and stretching for a few minutes each hour can also help.  Raising a computer monitor to a higher position can also help.
Vehicle Accidents:  When car accidents happen, people usually get hurt. Workers who drive as part of their jobs are on the road more than others so they are statistically more likely to be involved in car accidents. Distracted driving due to texting and other activities cause many car accidents. When driving, it’s very important to focus completely on driving.
Falling Objects: Head and neck injuries are a common result of falling objects in the workplace. That’s why hard hats are required at construction sites. It’s important to be aware of areas where things may be prone to falling. As much as possible, it’s a good idea to avoid standing in spots where things might fall.
Falling from High Places: Falling from a roof, a ladder, or down a stairway can cause serious injuries. Even a fall from a chair that someone stands on to change a light bulb can cause a serious injury. Paying attention and being careful are the keys to avoiding these injuries.
Walking Into Things: People walk into walls, doors, cabinets, glass, windows, tables, chairs, and other solid objects all the time. Some suffer from knee, neck, and foot injuries. Like other types of injuries, most of these can be avoided simply by paying attention.
How Chiropractic can help after a workplace injury?

When you are injured on the job, you want to get back to normal as soon as possible. Chiropractic care is the best treatment option for many common workplace injuries, including back injuries, neck injuries, bursitis, tendinitis, and rotator cuff tears.
Seeing a chiropractor as soon as possible after a work-related injury can dramatically improve your chances for a speedy recovery. People sometimes think that the body will heal itself over time. Occasionally, that’s true. However, some injuries don’t get better. Some injuries get worse.
An experienced Chiropractor can put patients on the road to recovery from an injury. After a careful and thorough evaluation, a Chiropractor will develop a treatment plan that will address the specific nature of the patient’s injury.
At Vibrant Life Health Center, I’ve helped many patients get back to work and back to their lives as quickly and as safely as possible. My goal is to help you to reestablish a normal and healthy life. If you're looking for effective relief after a work injury, call our office today to set up a consultation.
Life in Balance Tip of the Week: Chiropractic works!

A growing body of research shows that the services provided by chiropractic physicians are effective, safe, and cost-effective for many conditions. The following are excerpts from some of the recent research.
“Acute and chronic chiropractic patients experienced better outcomes in pain, functional disability, and patient satisfaction; clinically important differences in pain and disability improvement were found for chronic patients.”Haas et al (2005), Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics
“In our randomized, controlled trial, we compared the effectiveness of manual therapy, physical therapy, and continued care by a general practitioner in patients with nonspecific neck pain. The success rate at seven weeks was twice as high for the manual therapy group (68.3 percent) as for the continued care group (general practitioner). Manual therapy scored better than physical therapy on all outcome measures. Patients receiving manual therapy had fewer absences from work than patients receiving physical therapy or continued care, and manual therapy and physical therapy each resulted in statistically significant less analgesic use than continued care.” Hoving et al (2002), Annals of Internal Medicine
“Chiropractic patients were found to be more satisfied with their back care providers after four weeks of treatment than were medical patients. Results from observational studies suggested that back pain patients are more satisfied with chiropractic care than with medical care. Additionally, studies conclude that patients are more satisfied with chiropractic care than they were with physical therapy after six weeks.”Hertzman-Miller et al (2002), American Journal of Public Health
“Many treatments are available for low back pain. Often exercises and physical therapy can help. Some people benefit from chiropractic therapy or acupuncture.”Goodman et al. (2013), Journal of the American Medical Association

Don’t be an April Fool: How to find a great Chiropractor.

By Dr. Jon Thomas, DC, PSc.D, Board Certified Chiropractic Physician.
It’s fun to be foolish on April Fools’ Day. However, one thing people should never be foolish about is their health. Generally, people now know that smoking, drinking excessively, and being overweight can be very detrimental to their health. Avoiding bad habits is very important, but that’s not all there is to maintaining good health. For most people, one of the keys to staying healthy is having a good doctor as a health partner. When you look into chiropractic treatment, there are several important factors to consider.
Education and Qualifications
Life University
When it comes to dealing with your health and your body, it’s important to find a practitioner who has been properly educated and trained. When an auto mechanic makes a mistake due to a misdiagnosis, you might experience some inconvenience in your life because of it. For example, you might be late for work or you might have to ask someone for a ride. When a doctor makes a mistake, you could end up in pain, sick, or worse. You should be curious about your chiropractor’s education and training. It doesn’t hurt to ask where he or she went to school and what additional training he or she has had.
For example, I received my Doctorate of Chiropractic from Life University in Marietta, GA. Marietta may sound like a small town, but it’s actually very close to Atlanta. Life University’s College of Chiropractic is accredited by the Council on Chiropractic Education. It is one of the finest educational institutions of its kind in the world. The faculty includes some of the most experienced and highly regarded professionals teaching chiropractic today.
At Life University, I spent over 4,757 documented hours studying subjects such as biochemistry, microbiology, pathology, embryology, human anatomy, physiology, X-ray, diagnosis, chiropractic adjusting techniques, orthopedic testing, physiotherapy, and patient care in the Life University Outpatient Clinic.  I also received advanced training in functional neurology, pediatric care, Webster technique, 21st Century intracellular detoxification, clinical lab testing, bio-nutrition, nervous system balancing and spinal correction.
I have been trained in all of the following chiropractic techniques and have used each of them with patients throughout my career: Full Spine Diversified Technique, Gonstead, Thompson Technique, Activator, Cox, Toggle Upper Cervical Technique, Extremity Adjusting Technique, Soft Tissue Adhesion release, PNFT, FAKTOR, Sacral Occipital Technique, and numerous others.
Board Certification
Legitimate doctors are “board certified.” Most patients know that “board certified” sounds good, but many don’t actually know what that means. Board certification is a method to make sure that the people who practice medicine as doctors actually are doctors and that they are professional in their practices.
For example, I am a Board Certified Chiropractic Physician. My certification is from The Florida Board of Chiropractic Medicine. The Florida Board was legislatively established by the state to ensure that every chiropractic physician practicing in Florida meets minimum requirements for safe practice. The State of Florida wants to make sure that, “No person other than a licensed chiropractic physician may render chiropractic services, chiropractic adjustments, or chiropractic manipulations.”
Philosophy
“Chiropractic is a philosophy of health, a science of the nervous system
and spine, and an art of helping people regain their health naturally.
It recognizes that all organic systems in the universe are conscious,
self-developing, self-maintaining and self-healing.”

Life University
There are many approaches to medicine. Some of the differences are based on the medical philosophies which guide the doctor. Life University has a very good philosophy and I believe in it very strongly. I believe that there’s much more to health and wellness than the absence of pain or sickness. Taking more and more prescriptions to address health issues is not the way to wellness.
Health and wellness involve how well your nervous system is functioning, what goes into your body, and what goes onto your skin. It involves making good choices, reading labels and ingredients, and walking or just moving to the best of your ability. It is making a plan with real and measurable outcomes.
Following that philosophy, I use a system called the SHIFT paradigm, which consists of the following elements: Skeletal Structure, Headspace, Intake of Nutrients, Functional Fitness, Toxic Burden. (You can find more detailed information about the SHIFT Paradigm on the Vibrant Life website.)
Selecting a Chiropractor
One of the best ways to find a good chiropractor is to get referrals from family and friends. If someone you know refers to a chiropractor as a “miracle worker” there’s a good chance that you will have a good experience as well. Of course, it doesn’t work that way one hundred percent of the time.
Another way to check out a chiropractor is to look at his or her website. It should be informative with details about the doctor’s education and certification. It might also provide information about the various techniques used by the doctor. It might even have patient testimonials.
After reviewing the website, you can make a list of questions and then call the office to ask them. Naturally, the person on the other end of the phone should be as helpful as possible. At some point you will be asked to set up an initial appointment.
Health issues sometimes require prompt attention. Access to care is very important. If it takes weeks or months to get an appointment, you might want to find a practitioner who is easier to book an appointment with.
Also, it’s very important to feel comfortable with the chiropractor and his or her office. Location can make a big difference. Driving through heavy traffic or sitting too long in the waiting room can be a deal-breaker for some people.
Here are some of the other items you’ll want to consider:

  • Is the chiropractor friendly and courteous?
  •  Are you comfortable talking with the chiropractor?
  • Does the chiropractic doctor listen closely to you as you explain your symptoms and treatment preferences?
  • Does the chiropractor fully answer the questions you ask and are the answers in plain English?

Chiropractic Care at Vibrant Life Health Center
When selecting a chiropractor, it’s a good idea to find one who has been trained in more than two or three techniques. When a chiropractor only has a few methods in his or her toolbox, those are the methods he or she will use on each and every patient. A chiropractor who has mastered ten or more methods, as I have, has many more ways to address the unique and specific needs of each patient.
When you contact Vibrant Life, my assistants and I will listen very attentively to you and we will answer your questions to the best of our abilities. Then I will present you with a plan of action to address your specific needs. Vibrant Life Health Center offers a comprehensive list of services that include:
  • Specific chiropractic services focused on nervous system function and proper biomechanics throughout the body.
  • Acute care addressing disc injuries, sciatica, back pain, neck pain, and extremity dysfunction.
