Can you Kick the Common Cold?

By Dr. Jon Thomas, DC, PSc.D, Board Certified Chiropractic Physician.
“The United States experiences epidemics of seasonal flu each year. This time of year is called flu season. In the United States, flu viruses are most common during the fall and winter months. Influenza activity often begins to increase in October and November. Most of the time flu activity peaks between December and March and can last as late as May.”

Flu season is officially underway and the cold season never actually stops. When it comes to the common cold and/or the flu, prevention is far better than trying to fight back after symptoms have set in and your immune system has been weakened. Once you get symptoms, the sooner you take steps to fight back, the faster you will begin to get better. Allowing symptoms to progress for a few days only gives whatever is on the attack more of an opportunity to grow and get stronger.
It’s a bit like scurvy, a disease which is caused by vitamin C deficiency. The symptoms of scurvy include weakness, fatigue, along with sore arms and legs. It can also produce bleeding of the gums and skin. In severe cases, wounds are slow to heal. A person with scurvy can even die from bleeding and infection. Scurvy is rare these days. It is associated with malnutrition and occurs most frequently in developing countries.
Up to the 18th century, scurvy was a serious problem for sailors who spent long periods of time at sea. According to Wikipedia, James Lind, a surgeon in the Royal Navy, documented proof in 1753 that scurvy could be effectively treated with citrus fruit. Decades later, the British Navy began routinely distributing lemon and lime juice to sailors. (Hence the term Limeys.)
Vitamins C and D for Preventing Colds and the Flu
Vitamin D boosts the immune system and helps to prevent colds and flu. Sunlight on the skin produces vitamin D. When you spend a lot of time in the sun, you should, of course, be careful not to get sunburned. Another way to get vitamin D is by eating eggs, meat, and oily fish like salmon, mackerel and sardines. Dairy products also contain vitamin D.
Wikimedia Commons
Vitamin C, which is also known as ascorbic acid, is another key nutrient which has many important functions in the human body. It’s one of the key ingredients for repairing tissues throughout the body. It helps the body make collagen, a protein used to make skin, heal wounds, and maintain bones and teeth.
Most people now know how important Vitamin C is for the immune system. They also know that it’s in lots of foods, including citrus fruit. If you ask people how much vitamin C they should be consuming, many would simply say, “Plenty.” Something many people don’t realize is that it is possible to overdo it with mega-doses of vitamin C, and that can lead to gastrointestinal problems.
Many people take supplements that contain vitamins C and D and other vitamins and minerals. However, one size doesn’t necessarily fit all. It’s important to find out your levels of Vitamin C and other nutrients. If you don’t know your levels, you really don’t know how much to take.
That’s where micronutrient and macronutrient testing can be very beneficial. Testing can show a person exactly what levels of nutrients are present in the body. From there, it’s not hard to figure out ways to adjust the diet to get to the correct level for certain nutrients or to add a supplement in an appropriate dosage.
It's a very good idea to maintain the proper vitamin and mineral levels throughout the year. That will help your immune system function the way it should. Boosting your vitamin C level after symptoms of cold or flu have presented themselves is not nearly as effective as maintaining the proper level of vitamin C all the time.
Supplements
Not all supplements are created equally. There’s a great deal of variation in terms of quality. Also, even with supplements that have very similar components, the delivery system can differ making one much more effective than another.
When choosing supplements, be sure to get high quality supplements from reputable manufacturers. Keep in mind that every company that makes supplements has wonderful things to say about their own products. When you can find supplements that third parties have nice things to say about, it makes sense to get those.
At Vibrant Life Health Center, we offer only the highest quality supplements on the market. I and other members of my family use the same products Vibrant Life offers to patients. Here’s a summary of what we use on the Cold and Flu and have available for you!
Courtesy of Premier Labs
Nucleo-Immune Dietary Supplement: Nucleotides are tiny building blocks of RNA and DNA. Nucleotides can help the body to rapidly overcome colds or flu, heal wounds, improve circulation, strengthen the immune system, promote new cell growth, neutralize toxins (especially in the intestines), and enhance the body’s ability to fight infection and disease.
Nucleo-Immune is a dietary supplement which promotes rapid cellular rejuvenation and healing of wounds. It increases vitality and strength. It’s convenient because it contains several items that people buy separately. Nucleo-Immune supports the thymus, the intestinal and immune systems, and is especially effective as a preventative booster during the cold and winter season.
Colostrum: Colostrum is a special immune-active fluid secreted by a female cow for about three days after giving birth. Our colostrum is made by Premier Labs and it is obtained from a very select group of dairy farmers dedicated to producing high quality colostrum. During the summer, spring and fall, their cows are grass-fed (a superior nutrition source for cattle). During the winter, they are fed hay.
Zinc, an Essential Mineral: Zinc plays an important role in immunity. Research shows that adequate zinc consumption not only prevents the onset of colds and flu, but also decreases their duration. Zinc is regarded by many as the most effective remedy against the common cold. Adding the following foods to your daily intake will increase your zinc levels: oysters, crab, pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds, sunflower seeds, pine nuts, cashews, black beans, and shiitake mushrooms.
Wikimedia Commons
Elderberry Extract: Black elderberry juice inhibits the growth of influenza viruses and shortens the duration of symptoms. It also increases antibody levels against the virus. In addition, it helps reduce swelling in the sinuses and congestion. Elderberry is commonly available as a lozenge and in capsules. It’s also available as a liquid syrup in the UMCKA Cold Products line made by Nature’s Way.
Mucilage of Oats: For anyone who has caught a bug that’s going around and who has a lingering cough or sore throat, here’s an easy-to-make beverage that can help. Take 1 tbsp. oats and add it to 1 cup water. Bring to a boil, and then let it steep for five minutes. Strain out the oats and drink. This process takes the mucilage off of the oats, and it’s very soothing for the throat. If you’d like to sweeten it up a bit, you can add a little honey.
Wikimedia Commons
Echinacea: Echinacea is a flowering plant that grows in the U.S. and Canada. Echinacea strengthens the immune system and it also reduces many of the symptoms of colds and flu. It’s a very popular ingredient in supplements to boost the immune system. Echinacea is available over the counter at pharmacies, health shops and supermarkets as teas, liquid extracts, a dried herb, and as capsules or tablets.
I also wrote about our supplements in two blog posts last year.
Be prepared this year.
One of the keys to keeping your immune system in good working order is to take good care of yourself. Getting enough rest is one of the keys to that. Another key to having a healthy immune system is musculoskeletal health. Many people think of Chiropractic primarily as a way to deal with acute injuries. The fact is that proper alignment of the spine is also very beneficial to the immune system. Getting an adjustment while you’re feeling fine is a great idea and one more way to stay prepared for attacks on the immune system.
Some people catch cold or get the flu more or less continually. Some people stay sick so consistently that they reach a point where it seems normal to them. If you’ve had that experience, there may be a systemic problem which is causing your immune system not to function properly.
A nutrient deficiency could certainly be the cause of a problem like that. I urge anyone who gets cold and or/flu time after time to get micronutrient and macronutrient testing. In many cases this type of testing will help a practitioner to get to the root of the problem and to develop a treatment plan for correcting it.

What is a Tytron Scan?

By Dr. Jon Thomas, DC, PSc.D, Board Certified Chiropractic Physician.

When people go to the doctor, one of the first things that happens is that a nurse or an assistant takes their temperature. Usually they use a disposable thermometer under the tongue. Medical professionals know the importance of body temperature.
Chiropractors know that there is also excellent information to be found by looking at temperatures all over the body. They know that wherever there is a hot spot or a cool spot, there could be a problem.
All of the organs in a human body are controlled by the Central Nervous System. Nerves run from the brain and down the spinal column. From there, they innervate various organs throughout the body, including the heart, the lungs, and the skin. Each of the nerves leaving the spinal column innervates specific areas of the skin.
Normally there is symmetry in skin temperature. By symmetry, I mean that the temperature on one side of the spine should be the same temperature as the temperature directly on the other side of the spine. However, when there is interference in a nerve, it throws the body’s temperature symmetry out of balance.

Monitoring the spine for differences in temperature is one of the ways that Chiropractors can get to the root of a patient’s problem. Chiropractors refer to misalignments of the spine as subluxations. Subluxations cause interferences in the nerves. By locating temperature differences around the spine, a chiropractor can determine where a misalignment is causing interference. Once located, a misalignment can be corrected.
When the temperature on one side of the spine is the same as the temperature on the other side all the way down the spine, it indicates that the body is in balance and that the nervous system is functioning the way it should. Before instrumentation was developed to measure differences in skin temperature, Chiropractors would slowly run the back of their hands down a patient’s back to locate hot spots along the spine.  That was the hands-on approach.
Titronics and the Tytron Scanner
B.J. Palmer,

B.J. Palmer is known as the developer of modern Chiropractic. He was the founder of Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa. Palmer understood the significance of temperature symmetry.  In the 1920s an engineer named Dossa Evins worked with Palmer to develop an instrument for recording skin temperatures along the spine. Instruments for measuring skin temperature have been evolving ever since.
Titronics Research & Development Co. is the world’s leading manufacturer of precision instrumentation used by Chiropractors. The founder of the company was Roger Titon, an engineer. One of the early devices that his company developed was used in construction for gluing plywood together. Temperature measurements were very important in that process.
Titon realized that his technology, which could measure temperatures very accurately while moving along a surface, could be used for purposes other than construction. Earlier in his career, he had worked in the Orthopedics department at a hospital. He had an ongoing interest in healthcare and inquired of people as to what types of doctors were most interested in very accurate temperature measurements.
Up to that time, he knew nothing about Chiropractic. He talked to Chiropractors and determined that there was indeed a need for a good instrument for measuring temperatures. Around the same time, he hurt his own back while working on a car, and he made his first visit to a Chiropractor as a patient.  Necessity truly is the mother of invention! Roger Titon needed Chiropractic and Chiropractors needed better devices for measuring temperatures.
In 1985, Titronics introduced the C-2000, the first such instrument with infrared scanners. It recorded the temperature on both sides of the spine while being moved along the spine. It also had a measuring wheel which recorded where along the spine the temperatures were taken. It was a big step forward from the hands-on approach I mentioned above.
Since then, there have been many advances which have increased the accuracy and usefulness of Tytron scanners.
A Tytron Scan is Non-invasive, Painless, and Fast.

Courtesy of Titronics
The Tytron records the temperature on both sides of the spine as a Chiropractor moves it up the back. It is a tremendously useful instrument for locating the spots where the temperatures are not in symmetry. It can be used to locate temperature differences all the way up or down the spine, or it can be used to focus on a single area like the cervical spine.
With the Tytron scanner, there are no needles and there is no cutting. It’s completely painless. There’s no laying down on a cold flat table. There is no need to try to remain motionless for long periods of time as there is with an MRI. Nor is there any claustrophobia or unsettling noise. With Tytron technology, a Chiropractor can scan the entire spine in less than a minute.
At Vibrant Life Health Center, I use a C-5000 to get a better understanding of my patients’ issues. With the images produced by the Tytron scanner, I can get a picture of where the interferences are in a patient’s body.  The image is also an excellent tool for showing patients a picture of what’s going on in various parts of their bodies.
Another benefit of the Tytron system is that the graphs, taken over time, can be overlaid on each other. This presents a picture of what’s going on in a patient’s body not only in the present, but over a period of years. This is extremely useful information to practitioners as they endeavor to help their patients toward health and wellness.

What does Chiropractic have to do with hurricanes?

By Dr. Jon Thomas, DC, PSc.D, Board Certified Chiropractic Physician.

As residents of Northeast Florida recently discovered, a hurricane can be a major disruption. People try to be as prepared as possible, but there never seems to be enough time to prepare fully. When the storm hits, people hunker down and wonder when the power will go out. After the storm hits, they begin to take steps to clean up and then go on with their lives.
Every step of the way, there is some potential for injury. For example, some families have storm supplies in storage. Getting those supplies out of storage may involve gaining access to attics by ladders and pulling heavy items down from shelves. Reaching and lifting storm supplies, which seem like a routine activity, can lead to injury.
Also, in the preparation phase for a serious storm, people buy supplies like canned foods and bottled water. Cases of bottled water and canned foods are heavy. For someone who doesn’t get much exercise, picking up a case of water can cause a back injury.
Another thing that people purchase in anticipation of power outages are generators. In addition to being very heavy, generators are awkward to lift and carry. Just getting a generator out of a truck or van can cause a back injury.
Wikimedia Commons
Note: When running a generator, it’s very important to read the instructions. Generators produce carbon monoxide, a colorless and odorless gas which can kill a person in minutes. Also, since the exhaust from a generator is hot, it’s very important to make sure that the exhaust isn’t pointed toward anything flammable like wood siding.
During a storm, simply moving around a house can become challenging after the power goes out. Even with a flashlight, you don’t see as well as you would with normal lighting. It’s easy to trip or to bump into things when the lights are out. Another storm hazard involves dealing with high winds outside, which can result in a fall.
The danger isn’t over even after the storm passes by. In the aftermath of a storm, people sometimes hurt their backs, shoulders, and necks. There may be large trees or tree limbs that need to be cut and moved. Cutting wood may involve using the shoulder muscles in ways that most people don’t do very often. Then there’s debris that needs to be hauled to the street. Some of that debris can be heavy and awkward to drag.

How can a Chiropractor help?
Anytime a person has a back, neck, or shoulder injury, the first thing he or she should consider is getting checked out by a qualified Chiropractor. A trained Chiropractor knows that there are different kinds of pain and different ways to deal with pain. For example, pulsating pain is frequently associated with the cardiovascular system. Burning pain is often associated with the nervous system. Dull aching pain is frequently associated with muscles.
A Chiropractor understands the differences and knows the best approach to deal with these different types of pain.  Pain is essentially a signal, like a check engine light in a car. It tells people that something is not right in the body. A Chiropractor will assess the signal and figure out what’s causing the problem. Then he or she can get to the root cause.
The spine houses and protects the nervous system. When there is a misalignment in the spine, it can inhibit communication back and forth with the brain. It doesn’t take much of a misalignment to shut a nerve off. At that point, the brain may not be able to properly control a part of the body.
Through spinal decompression, a Chiropractor can increase the space for nerves to send their signals to the brain. There are no vessels in the disks and without Chiropractic, there is no way to remove toxins from the disks. A Chiropractic adjustment can help to rehydrate and nourish the disks.
Chiropractic is the safest form of healthcare available.
There are several different techniques available for dealing with the pain issues that people have. Whereas one technique may work very well for one person, it may not work well for another person with a similar condition. That’s why it’s good to go to a Chiropractor who has been trained in more than one or two techniques. A Chiropractor who knows six, eight or more techniques obviously has more tools at his disposal than a Chiropractor who only knows one or two techniques.
Developing a relationship with a Chiropractor
Courtesy of Vibrant Life
Many people wait until they have a serious problem before setting up an appointment with a Chiropractor. There’s really no need to do that. When a person goes to a Chiropractor as a part of a routine health regimen, the Chiropractor becomes familiar with the patient’s issues and concerns. That kind of relationship helps the doctor to address a patient’s problems as they come up.
At Vibrant Life Health Center, we now offer the Life in Balance plan which addresses all the needs of our patients. It incorporates weight loss, nutrition, fitness, Chiropractic, and much more. The Life in Balance plan eliminates the need to go to several practitioners who have different specialties.

October is Breast Health Awareness Month with many national and local events to raise awareness about breast health and cancer. The awareness is important to maintain not only throughout the month but to make sure it is an integral part of your preventative health plan. Understanding the steps you can take to screen, exam, and monitor breast health is a potent strategy. At Vibrant Life Health Center we are excited to share that we have added Meditherm Thermography which is the new gold standard in breast prevention which is described in more detail below.
There are many events going on in Jacksonville during October to raise awareness about breast cancer and breast health. Check out the calendar on the Florida Times-Union website for a list of events. Breast Cancer Awareness Calendar.
Important Facts to know About Breast Health Prevention:
Mammograms are currently not recommended for women under age 50 (who are most at risk for developing aggressive breast cancer) or women with breast implants.
Annual thermograms are recommended for women under 50, followed by ultrasound if the thermogram is abnormal.
Mammography is not capable of detecting breast cancer early, when quick action could improve long-term survival; mammography's error rate is unacceptable; and, exposure to the X-Rays used in mammography is reported to actually increase the risk of developing breast cancer.
Thermography is safe, accurate, and approved by the FDA for breast cancer risk assessment. It is successfully used throughout the world to detect signs of breast cancer up to 10 years before the cancer is detectable using mammography.
Extensive clinical trials have shown that breast thermography significantly augments the long term survival rates of its recipients by as much as 61%.
When used as a multimodal approach (clinical exam + mammography + thermography), 95% of early stage cancers will be detected.

Why is early detection so important?

What Are the Symptoms of Breast Cancer?
According to the Centers for Disease Control, symptoms of breast cancer can include any change in the size or the shape of the breast, pain in any area of the breast, nipple discharge other than breast milk (including blood), and a new lump in the breast or underarm. However, some people have no symptoms at all.
Most women who get breast cancer have no obvious risk factors and no family history of the disease. Factors that influence a person’s risk for breast cancer include being 50 years old or older. Although breast cancer screening cannot prevent breast cancer, it can help to identify breast cancer early, when it is easier to treat.
Early Detection is the Key to Survival!
Vibrant Life Health Center now offers Digital Infrared Thermal Imaging (DITI). DITI has been recognized as a viable diagnostic tool since 1987 by the AMA Council on Scientific Affairs, the ACA Council on Diagnostic Imaging, the Congress of Neuro-Surgeons, and the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.
Courtesy of Vibrant Life Health Center
Medical DITI is a non-invasive diagnostic technique which allows a practitioner to measure changes in skin surface temperature. An infrared scanning device converts infrared radiation emitted from the surface of the skin into electrical impulses. Those impulses produce a color image on a monitor. The images are referred to as thermograms, and they provide a map of a body’s temperature. Since there is normally a high degree of symmetry in body temperature, abnormal temperatures can be easily identified.
When people have a disease or an injury, one way to pinpoint it is by finding any thermal abnormalities in the patient’s body. DITI enables practitioners to detect and monitor diseases and injuries. DITI helps doctors to monitor injuries by comparing new images to images taken previously. DITI’s role in breast cancer and other breast disorders is to help in the early detection and monitoring of abnormal physiology. It takes years for a tumor to grow. The faster a malignant tumor grows, the more infrared radiation it generates.
Early detection of any abnormality is one of the keys to successful intervention and treatment. For younger women in particular, results from DITI screening can lead to early detection. DITI is non-invasive and it takes only fifteen minutes! There’s no waiting for days, or even hours, on the results. Color images are provided which help doctors and their patients visualize exactly what’s going on in the body.

DITI for Pain and Injuries
DITI is also used to locate problem areas associated with injuries. DITI is frequently used to help in the diagnosis of ankle injuries, shin splints, stress fractures, spinal pain syndromes, shoulder injuries, and foot pain syndromes. DITI can also be used to locate the sources of muscle, ligament, and nerve injuries.
