What to Expect When the Unexpected Happens!

"Your First Visit to the Vibrant Life Health Center"

By Tracy Thomas, Vice President

Dr. Thomas
Visiting a chiropractor for the first time can be like a box of chocolates. As Forrest Gump once said, “You never know what you’re gonna get.” For the most part, chiropractors do a more comprehensive job of getting to know you and your concerns before providing any treatment than regular MD’s. Having said that, not all chiropractic centers are created equal.
At the Vibrant Life Health Center, we want to provide you with a picture of what you’ll get on your first visit. But first – and there’s no way around it – there’s some paperwork to take care of. Naturally, to treat you effectively, we will need to know about your history and whatever discomfort you may be experiencing.
The nice thing is you can get the forms on our website, complete them in the comfort of your home, and bring them with you on your first visit to our office. There are diagrams for you to illustrate where your problem areas are. Filling out this material at home will allow you to put some thought into exactly what problems you would like Dr. Thomas to address.
When you get here, you’ll be greeted and you’ll need to sign a few additional forms that have to be signed on site. While our receptionist inputs your information into our system, you’ll have an opportunity to watch a short video about chiropractic. It’s very informative, and it explains terms like subluxation.
As defined by the Association of Chiropractic Colleges, a subluxation is a complex of functional and/or structural and/or pathological articular changes that compromise neural integrity and may influence organ system function and general health. Both the video and Dr. Thomas will explain why subluxations are a problem and how Chiropractic treatment can help.
Shortly after the video is over, you’ll meet with Dr. Thomas. He will begin discussing your medical history with you and ask you about whatever health problems motivated you to make an appointment.
The Tytron Nerve Scan
Dr. Thomas will then do a nerve scan with a Tytron instrument. Every organ in the human body is controlled by the central nervous system. The nerves are like wires running from the brain, down the spinal column, and out to each organ in the body, including the heart, the lungs, and even the skin. Each of the nerves emanating from the spinal column is associated with a particular part of the body and with a specific area of the skin. Interferences in the nerves can be the cause of problems in the body part associated with that nerve.
The Tytron Nerve Scan is a tool for measuring what’s happening on the outside of a person’s spine and upper cervical area. It’s completely painless and it only takes a minute or two. The data collected show where any interference may be occurring in the nerves. The printout from the Tytron shows the doctor and patient where the problems are. This enables the Vibrant Life team to specifically address areas of concern. It can also help to address problems that aren’t yet causing any symptoms for the patient.
Weighing in on a Bilateral Scale
The bilateral scale looks like two normal bathroom scales adjacent to each other. Being weighed on a bilateral scale shows how much of your weight is normally on each leg. The ideal is for a person’s weight to be evenly distributed. However, that frequently is not the case.
It can be surprising for patients to see that they’re carrying ten pounds more on one side than the other. An imbalance can cause discomfort in other parts of the body. It can lead to problems in the knees, the pelvis, and even in the shoulder opposite to the leg bearing most of a patient’s weight.
The Examination Room
In the examination room, Dr. Thomas will take you on a brief illustrated tour of Chiropractic. The pictures and diagrams on the walls, which have just the right level of detail, are there to show patients how the spine and the nervous system work with the rest of the body.
At some point, Dr. Thomas may mention that people make plans to buy vehicles, plans to buy houses, and plans for advancing in their careers. Then he may ask, “What have you done to plan for your health? What is your five-year plan?”
It’s a thought-provoking question because most people don’t think about planning for their health as much as they should. Lots of folks put more thought into rearranging their furniture than they put into planning for their own health.
Posture Evaluation
As a highly trained and experienced Chiropractor, Dr. Thomas can easily recognize many of the posture problems people are having. It’s not hard for him to see a condition like forward head posture, or to see when one shoulder is lower than the other, or a variety of other abnormalities.
However, patients don’t have to take his word for it. Believe it or not, he has an app on his phone which will take pictures from the front and side of the patient and will then provide an overlay diagram showing patients their posture challenges. Then and there, a patient will see the posture problems he or she is living with.
Tests to Make Sure Patient is Ready for Treatment
As he moves the patient from room to room, Dr. Thomas is becoming familiar with the patient, evaluating his or her condition, and developing a plan for treating the patient. Toward the end of the process, which takes about 45 minutes, Dr. Thomas will perform several tests to make sure the patient is able and ready to be adjusted. Before making any adjustment, Dr. Thomas performs several tests, including orthopedic, neurologic, sensation, reflex, and muscle tests.
Many chiropractors have one, or two, or perhaps three techniques at their disposal. Dr. Thomas has mastered many more techniques than the average Chiropractor. This enables him to approach problem areas in more than one way, depending on what he thinks will produce the best result and what the patient is comfortable with.
After the Adjustment
After getting an adjustment, the patient will be escorted to another room. He or she will be seated on a chair with a special pad for exercising the pelvis. Then the patient will be shown how to move around on the pad. This final step hydrates the spine which helps to lock in the adjustment.

How to Reduce Pain in the Neck, Part 1

By  Dr. Jon Thomas D.C PSc.D, Board Certified Chiropractic Physician.

Everyone experiences neck pain from time to time.  In Fact, neck pain is the third leading cause of chronic pain with more than a quarter of Americans being affected at any one time. Neck pain can be caused by injuries and sprains associated with the muscles, tendons, and ligaments that support the neck and head. More serious causes include disc herniation and pinched nerves. Fortunately, there are a number of simple things people can do to reduce or even eliminate potential neck troubles.

What is forward head posture?

Neck problems are very common for people who work with computers at desks. The condition they suffer from is known as forward head posture, and it can also be caused by watching TV or sleeping in an awkward position. The neck is supported by muscles and ligaments.  When the head juts forward out of its proper alignment, it places additional weight on the skeletal structure and soft tissues.

Forward head posture strains the muscles and ligaments in the neck. The more pronounced the forward head posture is, the more strain there will be to the muscles and ligaments in the neck. This type of strain, which is very common, is accompanied by pain, or even loss of sensation in the extremities. If left unchecked, this repetitive strain can result in permanent injury.

Put Your Computer Screen in the Proper Position

When people work at a desk that’s not set up properly, it can take a long time for them to realize there’s any problem. One of the keys to good posture while doing computer work at a desk is to have your computer screen at eye level. If you’re looking down, leaning forward, or allowing your head to drift forward over your shoulders in order to get a good look at the computer screen, you are putting stress on your neck muscles and ligaments. (This is especially problematic for those of us that use a tablet or smartphone to surf the web.)

Here’s how to find the right position. Sit in your office chair in front of your computer. Get comfortable and close your eyes. When you open them, you should be looking directly at the top of the computer screen. If you’re not able to look straight ahead at the computer screen, raise or lower it to align with your line of vision. Some computer monitors cannot be adjusted for height. In that case, you can get one that does adjust for height or you can place a book or other item under the monitor to adjust it upward to the correct level. You can also buy a stand or even use a box to raise the monitor to the proper level.  If you use a laptop, consider purchasing an external keyboard and mouse. Your neck will thank you.

Stretching Exercises for the Neck

When working at a desk, it’s good to get up and move around at least once every thirty minutes. This will allow you to stretch a bit and stay loose. Stretching the neck muscles throughout the day will keep your neck muscles strong and toned. Neck exercises also provide improved blood flow. This helps muscles and soft tissue to clear toxins from repetitive use, and it will also alleviate fatigue and soreness. A number of helpful videos demonstrating exercises for the neck are available on YouTube and elsewhere.

Hydration and Neck Health

The discs in the spine have no blood supply and are made mostly of water. Dehydration can cause sore neck muscles, dehydration of discs, and several other serious problems. Staying properly hydrated by drinking water throughout the day can significantly reduce the number of neck pain issues many people deal with on a daily basis.

At Vibrant Life, we suggest consuming one half your body weight in ounces per day. For example, if you weigh 160 pounds, we suggest drinking 80 ounces of water per day. That’s ten eight ounce glasses of water. If you haven’t been drinking enough water, we recommend gradually increasing your intake by eight ounces every two days until you get to the recommended daily level.

Periodic Adjustments by an Experienced Chiropractor

“A neck adjustment (also known as a cervical manipulation) is a precise procedure, usually applied by hand, to the joints of the neck. Your chiropractor has received extensive training to perform this procedure. Neck adjustment works to improve the mobility of the spinal discs in the neck in order to restore full range of motion.  An adjustment will also increase movement of the adjoining muscles to relieve pressure and tension. Patients typically notice a reduction of pain, soreness and stiffness, and improved ability to turn and tilt their head.” American Chiropractic Association

Top 5 Signs That Your Neck May Need an Adjustment:

1.    Persistent stiff neck

2.    Clicking sound when you turn your head

3.    Tingling or loss of sensation in the fingertips

4.    Frequent headaches

5.    Posture problems

Neck adjustment by a chiropractor is the most important step a person can take to eliminate neck pain. At Vibrant Life Health Center we apply specific scientific spinal adjustments. We also treat all related soft tissue abnormalities so you can experience fast relief and resolve any underlying problems. We have the technology and the skill to identify the root causes of problems. We have several techniques for effectively addressing problems in the body, and we will provide all patients with a customized plan designed to return them to health.

In this article, I have discussed forward head posture and how to reduce or eliminate neck pain. I’ve noted that for people who do computer work at desks, it’s very important to get the computer monitors adjusted to the correct height. Also, stretching the neck muscles daily can dramatically
reduce pain in the neck.

When Good Exercise Goes Bad, Part 1

Common Sports Injuries and How To Avoid Them

Exercise is generally a healthy activity. However, if exercises aren’t done correctly, injuries can result. The most common sports related injuries are due to overuse and strain. Excessive wear and tear on the body, particularly on areas subjected to repetitive activity such as the ankle, knee, shoulder, and elbow joints can strain those parts of the body.

Running leads to injuries more than any other form of exercise. Biking, dance (including high impact aerobics), tennis, basketball, gymnastics, football, soccer, and skating also lead to substantial numbers of injuries. Here are some of the most common injuries related to exercise and tips on how to avoid them.

Muscle Pulls

Strained and pulled muscles result from overexertion or excessive extension of a muscle. When a sudden, severe force is applied, the fibers in a muscle may be stretched beyond their capacity. This can happen during exercise or any other strenuous activity. Muscles that are commonly strained include the groin, rotator cuff, hamstring, calf, and knee muscles.

Warm up exercises before strenuous activities can reduce the likelihood of pulling muscles. People sometimes exercise too hard and too fast before their bodies have had an opportunity to warm up.  Even when you warm up and stretch, you may pull a muscle from strain, a slip, or overuse. Stretching after you exercise is important as it brings new blood flow into muscles and helps to remove toxins and lactic acid from the muscles.

Ice can be used to relax a pulled muscle and relieve spasms. When the injured muscle can be stretched as far as the healthy one on the other side of the body without causing pain, it is safe to return to exercising.

Neck Strain

Tennis players sometimes experience neck strain from looking up repetitively to serve. Cyclists and mountain bike riders may also experience neck strain and stiffness from long rides in an awkward position. The pain can make it difficult to move the neck normally.

As with pulled muscles, ice can relieve the discomfort of neck stiffness. Slow and gentle stretching of the neck from side to side and forward and backward can also bring relief. Stretching exercises can also be used to strengthen the neck and improve flexibility.

Lower Back

Lower back injuries can come from heavy lifting, from twisting awkwardly, or from engaging in activities that a person is not accustomed to. Overexerting the back can pull or tear fibers and tendons. This can lead to spasms and cause backaches. Fortunately, many backaches heal up and go away within a few weeks, with or without treatment.

For treatment of serious back injuries, an appointment with a chiropractor is recommended. He or she will be able to diagnose the injury and provide appropriate treatment. A chiropractor can also recommend safe and effective exercises for people with back conditions. Core exercises which strengthen the back and abdominal muscles can increase flexibility and help to prevent back injuries.

Ankle Sprains

Ankle sprains are very common for all sorts of athletes. Sprains involve stretching the ligaments in your ankle. A sprain can come from landing on your foot at an odd angle or with too much force. Walking, running, or playing on uneven surfaces in any physical activity can put you at risk for a sprain. Sports that require sudden changes in direction like football, soccer, and basketball have high incidences of ankle sprains.

The pain can be mild to severe and there may be swelling, bruising, and difficulty in moving the ankle. Minor to moderate ankle sprains normally heal on their own with time. It could take four weeks or more to heal from an ankle sprain. When recuperating from an ankle sprain, it’s a good idea to rest the ankle and apply ice to it.

Eventually, stretching can be done to help the healing. Until the ankle is completely healed, it’s not a good idea to return to strenuous physical activity. If you start pushing yourself before your ankle is healed, you can re-injure the ankle.

There are several things a person can do to minimize the risk of ankle sprains. Stretching and using shoes that fit well can help. Also, it’s important to avoid walking or running on uneven surfaces as much as possible. If you have had an ankle sprain in the past, you might consider precautions like taping up your ankle or using a brace.

Runner's Knee

Runner’s Knee is the most common cause of knee pain. The kneecap normally moves up or down in a groove as the knee flexes or straightens out. When the kneecap is not aligned correctly, it causes pain. This can cause the cartilage around the knee to wear out. Fluid can build up and cause swelling in the knee.

Treatment of knee injuries can include stretching the quadriceps and soft tissue massage on the quadriceps muscle. Exercising to strengthen the quadriceps muscle can help to prevent further knee injuries. Isometric exercises which contract and relax the muscle are a good way to start.

Tennis Elbow - Tendonitis

Tennis elbow is an inflammation of the muscles and tendons of the forearm. It is most often seen among tennis players, golfers, baseball pitchers, and weight lifters. The arm motions required in those sports are somewhat unnatural. When the muscles and tendons are overused, the muscles can become inflamed.

Surprisingly, changes in footwork can help people who play tennis to reduce the risk of Tennis Elbow. Good footwork can put the player in the proper position to hit with his or her full weight behind the ball. Good footwork takes the stress off the elbow during a tennis stroke and follow through. Golfers can also reduce the likelihood of elbow problems by improving their stroke.

Exercises including wrist curls and squeezing a soft rubber ball can strengthen the forearm muscles and reduce the risk of getting Tennis Elbow.

Avoiding Injuries

One of the best ways to avoid sports related injuries is to stay in shape, maintain a healthy weight, and avoid activities that might cause injuries. Staying in shape will keep your body stronger and more flexible. Maintaining a healthy body weight will prevent excessive stress on your knees and ankles. Some hazards are associated with physical activity, but being careful will keep the risk to a minimum.

Chiropractic care is also an important factor for athletes of all levels, concentrating on joint alignment and motion is key to reduce injuries, reduce recovery times from workouts, and aid in proper development during training sessions. Chiropractors are able to address issues throughout the body including the extremities like arms and legs.

Using the proper equipment is also very important to reduce injuries as well. Make sure that when exercising the gear you use is in good working order and shows within usable wear markings. If you question the gear, take it to an expert and they will review and suggest any needed improvements.

In this article, I have discussed common sports injuries and how to avoid them. These include pulled muscles, neck strain, lower back injuries, tendonitis, runner's knee, and ankle injuries.
