October is National Chiropractic Awareness Month.

By Dr. Jon Thomas, DC, PSc.D, Board Certified Chiropractic Physician.
Mayor Lenny Curry has made
an official proclamation that
October is Chiropractic Month
in Jacksonville.
There’s an ongoing epidemic of opioid use and abuse in the United States which frequently leads to addiction. The American Society of Interventional Pain Physicians has calculated that Americans consume 80 percent of the world’s opioids while making up only 4.6 percent of the world’s population. Opioid abuse costs employers approximately eighteen billion dollars per year in sick days, lost productivity, and medical expenses.
Painkillers are relatively easy to get and very easy to become addicted to. For example, Kurt Angle, a retired pro wrestler who won an Olympic Gold Medal in wrestling in 1996, recently disclosed to Dan Le Betard on ESPN that he became addicted to opioids after a serious neck injury. He said that at the height of his addiction, when he was taking 65 extra strength Vicodin pills per day, he finally realized he had a problem. Fortunately, he seems to be on the road to recovery.
Vibrant Life Health Center is joining Chiropractic physicians nationwide this October during National Chiropractic Health Month to raise awareness of drug free pain management. The campaign promotes the use of chiropractic to address pain problems before turning to opioids and other risky treatments. Chiropractic is an important and effective first line of defense against pain. People need to know that there are alternatives to painkillers.
What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic focuses on disorders of the musculoskeletal system and the nervous system, and the effects of these disorders on general health. Chiropractic services are frequently used to treat pain in the back, neck, hips, knees, shoulders, and elbows. Chiropractic can also be used for headaches. Chiropractors have broad diagnostic skills. They are trained to recommend therapeutic exercises. They can also provide nutritional, dietary, and lifestyle counseling.
Chiropractic adjustments are the foundation of keeping your Life In Balance. Everything that occurs in the body is done through the Central Nervous System (CNS). Your CNS travels through your spinal column which houses and protects it. When there are areas of your spine that are not in proper alignment your CNS is interfered with. This interference disrupts the nervous system from running your body properly.
There is a great deal of research on how interference can lead to Dis-Ease in your body and to chronic long-term issues. Chiropractic is the only method that can identify interferences, correct them, and maintain an optimal nervous system. Many chronic and painful conditions in the body are caused from malfunctioning joints. Chiropractors have specific training to identify and correct abnormal movement and musculoskeletal conditions.
Exams
Chiropractors are highly trained to perform examinations that evaluate and identify specific issues within the body. We utilize a broad range of techniques such as orthopedic exams, neurologic exams, palpation, range of motion, posture, gate (walking) patterns, and functional movement assessments. Chiropractors have methods to accurately identify the specific cause of a person’s problem. A Chiropractor can develop an effective treatment plan and identify any safety concerns that pertain to treatment.

The Cox 8 Table. Cox® Technic is a spinal manipulation that relieves back pain, leg pain, neck pain, arm pain, and a host of other spinal conditions. It was developed by renowned Chiropractor Dr. James M. Cox. In addition to the technique, Dr. Cox developed the Cox table which is regarded by many as the gold standard for Chiropractic tables. The innovations never stop and the table is now in its 8th generation. It is the culmination of decades of clinical research. I’m proud to say that the table in my office is a state-of-the-art Cox 8.
Tytron Scans
All of the organs in a human body are controlled by the Central Nervous System. Nerves run from the brain, down the spinal column, and they innervate various organs throughout the body including the heart, the lungs, and even the skin. Each of the nerves leaving the spinal column innervates specific areas of the skin, thus dividing the body into a patterned form known as dermatomes.
The nervous system uses vasoconstriction and vasodilatation of the capillary bed to help regulate body temperature. Irritations cause the skin's natural temperature symmetry to fall out of balance from the left to right side of the spine. These temperature changes indicate when there is a point of interference along these dermatomes. Once located, interferences can be corrected. The Tytron Scanner is what I use to find where the interferences are in a patient’s body.

Adhesion Breakers Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization Instruments.
Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization Instruments (IASTM) have been used for centuries in Chinese medicine. They have been further developed and improved in recent years by several manufacturers. IASTM helps to correct the adhesions and scar tissue that form due to injury and inflammation, which occurs during injuries, surgeries, overuse, and underuse conditions. IASTM increases tissue elasticity and fibroblastic activity to return the muscles and surrounding tissues to a status as close as possible to a patient’s pre-injury status. The instruments I use for IASTM, which are some of the finest in the world, are manufactured by Adhesion Breakers.
Intelect Legend XT E-Stim Machine
Electrotherapy is the application of electrical stimulation transmitted through the body via electrodes for therapeutic purposes.  With electrotherapy, the current flows through the body from one electrode to the other and causes various physiological reactions. The Intelect Legend XT is one of the most advanced therapy systems of this type available. With it, we are able to provide a range of beneficial therapies to our patients.
Life In Balance
The Life in Balance protocol for each patient is based on the results of the extensive tests we perform. As each person is unique, nutritional requirements for each patient are unique as well. We will put together a specific protocol of nutritional supplements that will address your deficiencies and also a specific plan for detoxifying your body. The Life In Balance protocol will provide you with a specific plan, leaving you with no worries about how to take your health to the next level!
If you’re suffering with pain in any part of your body and you’d like to find out how Chiropractic can help, or if you’d like to find out more about our Life in Balance program, please call.

What to Expect When the Unexpected Happens!

"Your First Visit to the Vibrant Life Health Center"

By Tracy Thomas, Vice President

Dr. Thomas
Visiting a chiropractor for the first time can be like a box of chocolates. As Forrest Gump once said, “You never know what you’re gonna get.” For the most part, chiropractors do a more comprehensive job of getting to know you and your concerns before providing any treatment than regular MD’s. Having said that, not all chiropractic centers are created equal.
At the Vibrant Life Health Center, we want to provide you with a picture of what you’ll get on your first visit. But first – and there’s no way around it – there’s some paperwork to take care of. Naturally, to treat you effectively, we will need to know about your history and whatever discomfort you may be experiencing.
The nice thing is you can get the forms on our website, complete them in the comfort of your home, and bring them with you on your first visit to our office. There are diagrams for you to illustrate where your problem areas are. Filling out this material at home will allow you to put some thought into exactly what problems you would like Dr. Thomas to address.
When you get here, you’ll be greeted and you’ll need to sign a few additional forms that have to be signed on site. While our receptionist inputs your information into our system, you’ll have an opportunity to watch a short video about chiropractic. It’s very informative, and it explains terms like subluxation.
As defined by the Association of Chiropractic Colleges, a subluxation is a complex of functional and/or structural and/or pathological articular changes that compromise neural integrity and may influence organ system function and general health. Both the video and Dr. Thomas will explain why subluxations are a problem and how Chiropractic treatment can help.
Shortly after the video is over, you’ll meet with Dr. Thomas. He will begin discussing your medical history with you and ask you about whatever health problems motivated you to make an appointment.
The Tytron Nerve Scan
Dr. Thomas will then do a nerve scan with a Tytron instrument. Every organ in the human body is controlled by the central nervous system. The nerves are like wires running from the brain, down the spinal column, and out to each organ in the body, including the heart, the lungs, and even the skin. Each of the nerves emanating from the spinal column is associated with a particular part of the body and with a specific area of the skin. Interferences in the nerves can be the cause of problems in the body part associated with that nerve.
The Tytron Nerve Scan is a tool for measuring what’s happening on the outside of a person’s spine and upper cervical area. It’s completely painless and it only takes a minute or two. The data collected show where any interference may be occurring in the nerves. The printout from the Tytron shows the doctor and patient where the problems are. This enables the Vibrant Life team to specifically address areas of concern. It can also help to address problems that aren’t yet causing any symptoms for the patient.
Weighing in on a Bilateral Scale
The bilateral scale looks like two normal bathroom scales adjacent to each other. Being weighed on a bilateral scale shows how much of your weight is normally on each leg. The ideal is for a person’s weight to be evenly distributed. However, that frequently is not the case.
It can be surprising for patients to see that they’re carrying ten pounds more on one side than the other. An imbalance can cause discomfort in other parts of the body. It can lead to problems in the knees, the pelvis, and even in the shoulder opposite to the leg bearing most of a patient’s weight.
The Examination Room
In the examination room, Dr. Thomas will take you on a brief illustrated tour of Chiropractic. The pictures and diagrams on the walls, which have just the right level of detail, are there to show patients how the spine and the nervous system work with the rest of the body.
At some point, Dr. Thomas may mention that people make plans to buy vehicles, plans to buy houses, and plans for advancing in their careers. Then he may ask, “What have you done to plan for your health? What is your five-year plan?”
It’s a thought-provoking question because most people don’t think about planning for their health as much as they should. Lots of folks put more thought into rearranging their furniture than they put into planning for their own health.
Posture Evaluation
As a highly trained and experienced Chiropractor, Dr. Thomas can easily recognize many of the posture problems people are having. It’s not hard for him to see a condition like forward head posture, or to see when one shoulder is lower than the other, or a variety of other abnormalities.
However, patients don’t have to take his word for it. Believe it or not, he has an app on his phone which will take pictures from the front and side of the patient and will then provide an overlay diagram showing patients their posture challenges. Then and there, a patient will see the posture problems he or she is living with.
Tests to Make Sure Patient is Ready for Treatment
As he moves the patient from room to room, Dr. Thomas is becoming familiar with the patient, evaluating his or her condition, and developing a plan for treating the patient. Toward the end of the process, which takes about 45 minutes, Dr. Thomas will perform several tests to make sure the patient is able and ready to be adjusted. Before making any adjustment, Dr. Thomas performs several tests, including orthopedic, neurologic, sensation, reflex, and muscle tests.
Many chiropractors have one, or two, or perhaps three techniques at their disposal. Dr. Thomas has mastered many more techniques than the average Chiropractor. This enables him to approach problem areas in more than one way, depending on what he thinks will produce the best result and what the patient is comfortable with.
After the Adjustment
After getting an adjustment, the patient will be escorted to another room. He or she will be seated on a chair with a special pad for exercising the pelvis. Then the patient will be shown how to move around on the pad. This final step hydrates the spine which helps to lock in the adjustment.
 Consultation with Dr. Jon Thomas

In this article, I have discussed what patients can look forward to when they visit the Vibrant Life Health Center for the first time. Through December, new patients can get complimentary Posture Analysis, Tytron Nerve Scan, and a one-on-one consultation about their health with Dr. Thomas.

How to Reduce Pain in the Neck, Part 2

By  Dr. Jon Thomas D.C PSc.D, Board Certified Chiropractic Physician.

Lots of people suffer from neck pain. It can be caused by injuries and sprains of the muscles, tendons, and ligaments around the neck. The neck is also known as the cervical spine. In my previous post, I mentioned some of the things people can do to reduce or eliminate neck pain. Here are several more.
Be Mindful of Weight Slung Around the Neck
When you carry something with a strap around your neck, it may not seem like the kind of activity that will do any damage. However, there can be a cumulative price to pay if you’re not careful. People who frequently carry a heavy purse, book bag, or piece of luggage with a strap around their necks sometimes have neck problems. Photographers who carry lots of equipment in their camera bags sometimes develop arthritis in the neck as the result of the weight they carry.
Courtesy of Collective Education
If you have to carry heavy things with a strap around your neck, be mindful that if the strap goes around the same side of your neck every time, the natural result will be more wear and tear on that side of your neck. It will be much better for you if you switch sides so that the burden is spread out evenly over time.
If you have to carry a heavy load frequently, a high quality backpack that will distribute the weight evenly could be a very good investment. Backpacks are now available with inflatable air bladders for extra lumbar support. This can help to distribute weight more evenly as well.
Sleep Position
The position you sleep in can have a major impact on the health of your back and neck. Many in the medical community believe that the best position for sleep is on your back. This allows your neck and back to rest comfortably in a neutral position.
If you prefer sleeping on your side, a pillow that is at least four to six inches thick is recommended. This will prevent your head and neck from turning in an unnatural way. It will also allow your muscles to rest without strain.
Sleeping on the stomach is generally not recommended.
Get the Right Pillow
According to research listed in an article titled Consequences of Sleeping the Wrong Way in Everyday Health, “Finding the right pillow can improve the quality of your sleep and prevent or reduce neck pain. If you sleep on your side, pick a pillow that just fills the space between your ear and your mattress without tilting your head. If you sleep on your back, your pillow should keep your head from tilting backward or forward.”
Considering that most people spend about a third of their life in bed, it’s a good idea to invest in a high quality pillow that will help provide a good night’s sleep. Years ago, there were only two options for pillows: feather pillows or foam pillows. Today, there are many other options. Memory foam pillows are now on the market as well as water-filled pillows which can be adjusted.
Courtesy of Wikimedia
Cervical pillows are roll-shaped pillows designed to relieve neck stress and neck pain by maintaining the natural shape of your head and neck throughout your sleep cycle.   Cervical pillows provide extra support under the neck and the head. This helps to keep the neck in alignment with the spine. Whereas traditional pillows are flat, cervical pillows are shaped with deeper depressions to cradle the head.
Use a Telephone Headset
Before the turn of the millennium, most telephones were attached to cords. In office settings, people frequently twisted their necks in an unnatural way to cradle their handsets between their ears and shoulders. There were even braces that could be attached to handsets to make it a bit more comfortable. For most people, those days of discomfort are gone, thank goodness. Now we have wireless office phones, speakerphones and/or cell phones.
If your work requires you to spend lots of time on the phone, consider getting a telephone headset. A hands-free headset doesn’t require a person to get into position to make a telephone call. It allows the user to move about freely and to stay in the most comfortable position possible. There are lots of different styles of headsets to choose from. The more lightweight the headset is, the less strain it will put on a user’s neck muscles.  The weight of a headset may not seem like enough to ever cause a problem. However, even a little weight day after day for a long time can take a toll.
Periodic Adjustments by an Experienced Chiropractor
It’s very important to do whatever you can to keep your back and neck healthy. Problems with the back or the neck can have a profound effect on a person’s quality of life. A neck adjustment by a chiropractor can be one of the keys to reducing or eliminating neck pain. At Vibrant Life Health Center we apply specific scientific spinal adjustments to alleviate and eliminate pain in the neck.
We also treat related soft tissue abnormalities and resolve any underlying problems so the patient experiences relief as expeditiously as possible. We have the technology and the skill to identify the root causes of many health problems. Our time-tested techniques effectively address a multitude of problems in the body. To help our patients get well and achieve their health goals, we provide them with customized plans.
In this article, I have discussed how to reduce or eliminate neck pain. I’ve suggested that people should be careful when it comes to carrying things around their necks. I’ve also discussed sleep positions, pillows, and telephone headsets for people who work on the phone a lot. Finally, I’ve noted that a neck adjustment by a chiropractor can be very helpful.

The Many Facets of Chiropractic

By  Dr. Jon Thomas D.C PSc.D, Board Certified Chiropractic Physician.

Many people are first introduced to a chiropractor after they sustain an injury due to an accident, a fall, or simply the wear and tear induced by the rigors of life. No single technique or adjustment style, chiropractic utilizes a myriad of treatment modalities designed to adjust the musculoskeletal system in order to resolve many issues that cause pain. In order to bring the body back into balance, there are a number of chiropractic treatments that are very effective for resolving these issues.
The Cox® Table at Vibrant Life

Cox® Technique

Cox® Technic is a non-surgical, doctor-controlled, hands-on spinal manipulation performed with the patient lying on The Cox® Table. The goal of Cox® Technic is to reduce a patient’s pain as quickly as possible. This technique utilizes flexion-distraction and decompression to relieve spinal pain in order to return patients to their desired quality of life by:
  • Reducing internal disc pressure
  • Widening the spinal canal area
  • Opening the space for nerve roots
  • Reducing pressure on the spinal nerves
  • Returning motion to all the spinal joints.

Extremities Techniques

Chiropractic health is much more than simply having a straight, healthy spine. It encompasses optimal extremity function and performance, balance, energy, pain reduction or elimination, nutrition, brain and organ function, muscle performance and development, and more. A Chiropractor can diagnose and treat the root causes of recurring pain in the spine and also the extremities. He/she is equipped to successfully treat all of the following:
  • temporomandibular joint and muscle disorder (TMJ)
  • shoulder girdle syndrome
  • tennis elbow
  • carpal tunnel
  • knee subluxation
  • baker’s cysts
  • sprained ankles
  • shin splints
  • foot and gait mechanics
  • misaligned hips
  • leg length issues.

Vibrant Life Health Center

Thompson Technique

The Thompson Technique utilizes a Segmental Drop Table to enhance the motion force imparted towards the segment or area that needs to be adjusted. Dr. Thompson introduced the concept of adding motion by inventing a headpiece that would drop away as the adjustive thrust was applied to the vertebral segment. The Segmental Drop System utilizes the spine’s inherent design in order to move the spinal segment in the direction that will improve the motion of the segment with the one above and below. Since the spinal joints face front to back and have an incline that naturally slopes backwards, a chiropractor can affect increased motion by applying an adjustment from posterior to anterior. The Thompson Technique allows the practitioner to elicit adjustment into segmental areas of the spine without introducing high forces. This allows the chiropractor to address sensitive areas with care that is both effective and gentle.

Activator Method

The Activator Method incorporates the latest advances in orthopedic, neurological, and chiropractic science. This technique is based on low force and high speed activation of the skeletal structure. The Activator Method is now the most widely used “low force” technique in chiropractic. This system of adjusting restores proper balance and does it with improved safety and comfort. The Activator Method utilizes a small spring-loaded adjusting instrument to deliver a focused corrective impulse into the dysfunctional spinal segment. This technique is most commonly used in patients who prefer a low-force correction without the traditional “hands-on” thrust.

Diversified Technique

The Diversified Technique is the most commonly used adjustment technique by chiropractors. Like many chiropractic and osteopathic manipulative techniques, the Diversified Technique is characterized by a high-velocity, low-amplitude thrust. Diversified is considered the most generic chiropractic manipulative technique and is differentiated from other techniques in that its objective is to restore proper movement and alignment of spine and joint dysfunction.

FAKTR

FAKTR (pronounced “factor”) is a revolutionary technique for treating soft tissue problems. It is effective for many conditions including headaches, back pain, shoulder problems, pain in the elbows, foot problems, and other injuries to the extremities. People are injured all the time through falls, auto accidents, sports injuries, and their work. Some injuries bother people for a long time before they seek treatment. Some people seek treatment very soon after they experience a new condition. Either way, there are many problems that can be resolved within a few treatments with the FAKTR Technique.

Electrical Stimulation Therapy

Electrical Stimulation Therapy uses an electrical current to cause a single muscle or a group of muscles to contract. By placing electrodes on the skin in various locations, the practitioner can recruit the appropriate muscle fibers. Contracting the muscle via electrical stimulation helps strengthen the affected muscle.

The practitioner can change the setting to allow for a forceful or gentle muscle contraction. Along with increasing muscle strength, the contraction of the muscle also promotes blood supply to the area that assists in healing. Vibrant Life Health Center utilizes the following applications:
  • Inferential E-Stem
  • Premod E-Stem
  • Russian E-Stem
  • Micro Current
  • Ultra Sound
  • High Volt Galvanic
  • Active Tissue Therapy
Applying tension to injured tissue while it is in active motion allows a practitioner to break down scar tissue and address the inured response of supportive facial, muscular, vascular, and other tissues. This increases healing, function, and strength in the affected areas.

Adhesion Breakers

Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM) instruments have been used for centuries in Chinese medicine. In recent years, they have been further developed and improved by Adhesion Breakers. IASTM instruments are designed to be used with other modalities to increase the effectiveness of the soft tissue work being performed. This technique helps to correct the adhesions and scar tissue that form due to injury and inflammation from injuries, surgeries, and overuse/underuse conditions.
By increasing tissue elasticity and fibroblastic activity, muscles and surrounding tissues can be returned to a status as close as possible to the pre-injury condition. This is accomplished by initiating a controlled inflammatory process which allows the tissue to begin the healing process.  Breaking down scar tissue and adhesions in the tissue, and redirecting collagen formation in the proper orientation helps to improve movement of muscles and tissues.

Kinesio-taping

Kinesio Tape has been in existence for over 25 years. When it is adhered to the skin, it lifts the tissue away from the injured area and fascia. This allows blood to flow properly and alleviates swelling, thus promoting healing. There are numerous specified taping techniques used to facilitate the healing process.

In this article I’ve provided summaries of chiropractic techniques used by Vibrant Life Health Center. These techniques can be used to reduce or eliminate pain and to correct problems with spinal alignment. These techniques can also be used to address issues in the extremities.
