October is National Chiropractic Awareness Month.

By Dr. Jon Thomas, DC, PSc.D, Board Certified Chiropractic Physician.
Mayor Lenny Curry has made
an official proclamation that
October is Chiropractic Month
in Jacksonville.
There’s an ongoing epidemic of opioid use and abuse in the United States which frequently leads to addiction. The American Society of Interventional Pain Physicians has calculated that Americans consume 80 percent of the world’s opioids while making up only 4.6 percent of the world’s population. Opioid abuse costs employers approximately eighteen billion dollars per year in sick days, lost productivity, and medical expenses.
Painkillers are relatively easy to get and very easy to become addicted to. For example, Kurt Angle, a retired pro wrestler who won an Olympic Gold Medal in wrestling in 1996, recently disclosed to Dan Le Betard on ESPN that he became addicted to opioids after a serious neck injury. He said that at the height of his addiction, when he was taking 65 extra strength Vicodin pills per day, he finally realized he had a problem. Fortunately, he seems to be on the road to recovery.
Vibrant Life Health Center is joining Chiropractic physicians nationwide this October during National Chiropractic Health Month to raise awareness of drug free pain management. The campaign promotes the use of chiropractic to address pain problems before turning to opioids and other risky treatments. Chiropractic is an important and effective first line of defense against pain. People need to know that there are alternatives to painkillers.
What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic focuses on disorders of the musculoskeletal system and the nervous system, and the effects of these disorders on general health. Chiropractic services are frequently used to treat pain in the back, neck, hips, knees, shoulders, and elbows. Chiropractic can also be used for headaches. Chiropractors have broad diagnostic skills. They are trained to recommend therapeutic exercises. They can also provide nutritional, dietary, and lifestyle counseling.
Chiropractic adjustments are the foundation of keeping your Life In Balance. Everything that occurs in the body is done through the Central Nervous System (CNS). Your CNS travels through your spinal column which houses and protects it. When there are areas of your spine that are not in proper alignment your CNS is interfered with. This interference disrupts the nervous system from running your body properly.
There is a great deal of research on how interference can lead to Dis-Ease in your body and to chronic long-term issues. Chiropractic is the only method that can identify interferences, correct them, and maintain an optimal nervous system. Many chronic and painful conditions in the body are caused from malfunctioning joints. Chiropractors have specific training to identify and correct abnormal movement and musculoskeletal conditions.
Exams
Chiropractors are highly trained to perform examinations that evaluate and identify specific issues within the body. We utilize a broad range of techniques such as orthopedic exams, neurologic exams, palpation, range of motion, posture, gate (walking) patterns, and functional movement assessments. Chiropractors have methods to accurately identify the specific cause of a person’s problem. A Chiropractor can develop an effective treatment plan and identify any safety concerns that pertain to treatment.

The Cox 8 Table. Cox® Technic is a spinal manipulation that relieves back pain, leg pain, neck pain, arm pain, and a host of other spinal conditions. It was developed by renowned Chiropractor Dr. James M. Cox. In addition to the technique, Dr. Cox developed the Cox table which is regarded by many as the gold standard for Chiropractic tables. The innovations never stop and the table is now in its 8th generation. It is the culmination of decades of clinical research. I’m proud to say that the table in my office is a state-of-the-art Cox 8.
Tytron Scans
All of the organs in a human body are controlled by the Central Nervous System. Nerves run from the brain, down the spinal column, and they innervate various organs throughout the body including the heart, the lungs, and even the skin. Each of the nerves leaving the spinal column innervates specific areas of the skin, thus dividing the body into a patterned form known as dermatomes.
The nervous system uses vasoconstriction and vasodilatation of the capillary bed to help regulate body temperature. Irritations cause the skin's natural temperature symmetry to fall out of balance from the left to right side of the spine. These temperature changes indicate when there is a point of interference along these dermatomes. Once located, interferences can be corrected. The Tytron Scanner is what I use to find where the interferences are in a patient’s body.

Adhesion Breakers Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization Instruments.
Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization Instruments (IASTM) have been used for centuries in Chinese medicine. They have been further developed and improved in recent years by several manufacturers. IASTM helps to correct the adhesions and scar tissue that form due to injury and inflammation, which occurs during injuries, surgeries, overuse, and underuse conditions. IASTM increases tissue elasticity and fibroblastic activity to return the muscles and surrounding tissues to a status as close as possible to a patient’s pre-injury status. The instruments I use for IASTM, which are some of the finest in the world, are manufactured by Adhesion Breakers.
Intelect Legend XT E-Stim Machine
Electrotherapy is the application of electrical stimulation transmitted through the body via electrodes for therapeutic purposes.  With electrotherapy, the current flows through the body from one electrode to the other and causes various physiological reactions. The Intelect Legend XT is one of the most advanced therapy systems of this type available. With it, we are able to provide a range of beneficial therapies to our patients.
Life In Balance
The Life in Balance protocol for each patient is based on the results of the extensive tests we perform. As each person is unique, nutritional requirements for each patient are unique as well. We will put together a specific protocol of nutritional supplements that will address your deficiencies and also a specific plan for detoxifying your body. The Life In Balance protocol will provide you with a specific plan, leaving you with no worries about how to take your health to the next level!
If you’re suffering with pain in any part of your body and you’d like to find out how Chiropractic can help, or if you’d like to find out more about our Life in Balance program, please call.

Independence from Pain through Chiropractic

The beginning of July is a time when Americans reflect on the many freedoms they enjoy, freedoms that people in other nations may not have. As Americans, we are very fortunate to have the freedoms we have, and we should never take them for granted. With that in mind, I’d like to wish a very Happy Fourth of July to all the patients to whom we provide services at Vibrant Life Health Center. The same goes for our employees and all of our business associates.
Freedom from Pain
One freedom that has not yet been added to the Bill of Rights is the right to live free of pain. Perhaps, someday in the not-so-distant future, our political leaders will recognize the deep-seated need many people have to be free of pain. I’m just kidding. The government, unfortunately, can’t guarantee freedom from pain.
One of the things that really can help with pain is Chiropractic treatment. Chiropractic has proven to be effective for providing relief from pain in virtually every part of the body, including:
  • Lower back, middle back, and upper back
  • Shoulders
  • Neck
  • Elbows
  • Wrists
  • Knees
  • Ankles
  • Hips
  • Elbows
Many patients suffer from pain for a long time before seeking treatment of any kind. Some think that whatever is ailing them will eventually get better over time. Some think that if they’re patient enough and “tough it out” the pain will go away. Some have tried traditional medicine, including painkillers which can be highly addictive, and they just don’t think that anything will work for them. Since nothing has worked for them, they think that nothing ever will work for them.
Some people have suffered from pain for so long they no longer remember what it’s like to not be in pain. It’s hard to believe, but some people do live that way. The good news is that you don’t have to live that way. Relief is available! After receiving their first adjustment from a trained Chiropractor, many people can hardly believe the level of relief they experience. Most wish they had gotten Chiropractic treatment much, much sooner.

A Short History of Chiropractic
According to the American Chiropractic Association, the word ‘Chiropractic’ comes from the Greek words cheir (meaning ‘hand’) and praktos (meaning ‘done’). In essence, it means “done by hand.” The name was chosen by Daniel David Palmer, the developer of Chiropractic.
Palmer recognized that various forms of manipulation had been used for hundreds, if not thousands, of years. However, no one had ever codified a philosophical or scientific rationale to explain the effects of spinal manipulations. Palmer’s primary contribution to the health field was the art and science of Chiropractic, which was based on his study of anatomy and physiology.
In September 1895, Palmer examined a janitor who had become deaf 17 years earlier after he felt a change in his back. Palmer examined the area and gave an “adjustment” to what he believed to be a misplaced vertebra in the upper back. The janitor’s hearing improved.
DD Palmer continued to develop the practice of Chiropractic. In 1897, he established the Palmer School of Cure, which is now known as the Palmer College of Chiropractic, in Davenport, Iowa. Many people became interested in Palmer’s new healing art. Kansas became the first state to license Chiropractors in 1913.
By 1931, thirty-nine states had given chiropractors legal recognition. Today, all 50 states recognize Chiropractic as a health care profession. Many other countries also recognize and regulate Chiropractic, including Canada, Mexico, Great Britain, Australia, Japan and Switzerland.
How does Chiropractic Treatment relieve pain?

A great deal of the pain human beings experience is due to some part of their body being out of proper alignment. Like the front end of a car, body parts have to be properly aligned to function correctly. This is especially true of the spine, which is the part of the body to which all the other parts are attached. Chiropractors refer to misalignments of the spine as subluxations. A subluxation can affect nerves. When that happens there may be pain right at the subluxation point as well as other areas of the body connected by nerves to that spot.
Spinal manipulation differentiates Chiropractic treatment from other medical practices. Chiropractors are highly trained to perform adjustments to bring the spine into proper alignment. There are several techniques. The more techniques a Chiropractor masters, the more tools he or she has at his or her disposal to help patients. This enables the practitioner to choose the technique which will best address whatever problem a patient is having and to do so in a way that is most comfortable for the patient. For example, I have been trained in numerous techniques, including the following:
The Cox® Technique, a non-surgical, doctor-controlled, hands on spinal manipulation performed with the patient lying on The Cox® Table.
Extremities Techniques optimize function and performance, balance, energy, muscle performance and development, and more.
The Thompson Technique utilizes a “Segmental Drop Table” to enhance the motion force imparted towards the segment or area to be adjusted.
Activator Technique involves low force and high speed activation of the skeletal structure. This technique incorporates the latest advances in orthopedic, neurological, and Chiropractic science.
Diversified Technique is the most commonly used adjustment technique by chiropractors. Like many Chiropractic and osteopathic manipulative techniques, Diversified is characterized by a high-velocity, low-amplitude thrust.
FAKTR is a technique for treating soft tissue problems. It is effective for many conditions, ranging from headaches, back pain, shoulder problems, pain in the elbows, pain in the feet, and pain in just about any part of the body.
Neuromuscular Re-Education is a “stand-alone” hands-on technique/approach to the evaluation and functional treatment of soft tissue injuries.
Electrical Stimulation Therapy uses an electrical current to cause a single muscle or a group of muscles to contract. Contracting the muscle via electrical stimulation helps strengthen the affected muscle.
Active Tissue Therapy applies tension to injured tissue while it is in active motion. This allows us to break down scar tissue and improve healing, function, and strength.
As you can see, Chiropractic is used for much more than low back pain. Chiropractic is also very effective for addressing pain in the extremities. Also, since many headaches are actually the result of misalignments of the spine, including the neck area, Chiropractic is very effective for treating headaches as well.
Since every part of the body is connected to the spine, Chiropractic can also be very effective for addressing problems in other parts of the body, parts of the body many people would not normally associate with the back. For example, some gastrointestinal problems are the result of subluxations which are affecting the nerves leading to the GI tract. Efforts to treat some GI problems without addressing associated nerve problems aren’t likely to produce the desired results.
If you are suffering with pain in any part of your body, and especially if you’ve been in pain for a long time, I urge you to look into Chiropractic treatment. Pain that is left untreated can affect every minute of every day. Pain can also keep a person from getting a good night’s sleep. Chiropractic can provide relief, in many cases instant relief. Even if you’ve tried Chiropractic without getting a positive result, you may want to look into it again. Different techniques produce different outcomes. Also, as with other professions, some doctors are better at what they do than others.

In this article, I have discussed a very short history of Chiropractic and how Chiropractic gives people freedom from pain. I’ve listed many, but not all, of the techniques I use with patients. I’ve also discussed the fact that Chiropractic is effective for treating problems in parts of the body other than the back.

Health and Wellness Open House on Saturday, May 21st

Tracy and I and the rest of the team are really looking forward to our Health and Wellness Open House on Saturday, May 21st. It will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Vibrant Life Health Center, 12627 San Jose Blvd., Suite 502. We’ve been planning this for some time as a way of introducing ourselves to people in the surrounding community who are not yet familiar with the range of services we provide.

We’ll be giving away the NutriMost program to one fortunate person who will have the opportunity to lose twenty pounds or more in just forty days. By the 4th of July, someone is going to be looking and feeling great! We have details on how to enter the contest for that on our Facebook pages or on the First Coast Living website.

We’ll be doing Tytron nerve scans for free and we’ll be offering a body composition analysis for $20, which is a substantial discount off the regular fee. We will have refreshments and we’ll be giving away a Whole Foods and Native Sun gift card for $250. Other items to be given away include an Urban Coffeehouse Gift Card, a Beauty Package from Metamorphosis Salon, and Mini Massages by Zyra Arroyo, LMT of Massage Renaissance.

If you have an aching back, sore knees, persistent pain in the shoulders, stiffness in the neck, or any other condition for which chiropractic could help, be sure to come by. It will be a perfect opportunity to find out how chiropractic treatment can put your body, and your life, back into alignment. Treatment is making a very positive difference in the lives of many people and you’ll be able to talk to some of them at the open house.

Several NutriMost patients will also be at the Open House. They will be telling their stories of shedding twenty pounds or more in just forty days. Real people with real stories! Anyone who is interested in NutriMost will be able to ask people who have been on it how it worked for them.

From Despair to Confidence with NutriMost

I personally walk patients through the process in the NutriMost program. By the time some patients find NutriMost, they’ve lost hope that anything will work for them. They’ve tried system after system, program after program, and nothing has worked for them. They’ve tried medications, they’ve done this, they’ve done that. Some people are completely discouraged by the time they try NutriMost.

We team up with them and walk them through the phases. As their bodies begin to function more effectively, they become hopeful and then confident. By the time they go through the process of transformation, they become amazed at what they’re accomplishing and at what they can accomplish. NutriMost puts the pieces together for people to accomplish their weight loss and wellness goals.

Patients can contact me about any challenges they may be facing at any time, and they do. This is one of the biggest differences between NutriMost and other programs, and it makes an enormous difference. Seeing the positive changes people are making in their lives is very gratifying for me personally. As far as I’m concerned, nothing compares to that.

People face challenges in the process of losing weight. They might be going to an event where they know there will be an excellent buffet with lots of delicious food. Maybe even their favorite foods. It’s not easy to walk by when the food looks and smells really good. It takes a plan and I love being in a position to help people in those challenging situations. I love what I do and I love the connection I have with people.

One size does not fit all when it comes to the way people’s bodies work. We’re all at least a little bit different and those differences affect the way we process food, gain weight, and lose weight. People have trigger foods which are just no good for them and which should be avoided. For me, it’s salmon. Other people can eat all the salmon they want and have no problem whatsoever. Of course, they have different trigger foods that they should avoid.

NutriMost addresses the differences. We present each patient with a customized program that will work for him or her. It all starts with a body composition analysis which shows in great detail how a person’s body is functioning and how it’s processing things.  By the end of that, people know what their deficiencies are and where the body is not functioning optimally. They know what challenges are specific to them, challenges that might not be a problem at all to other people.

I sit down one-on-one with every patient and explain how the program works and how it’s going to work, very specifically, to address the issues they might have. We look at fat metabolism. We go through all the steps and make sure they know how to contact me whenever they need to. We stay in touch through daily texts. We are with them every step of the way.

Courtesy of Vibrant Life Health Center
After a patient has gone through the 40 day NutriMost fat burn, we take them through a three step program. We do a reset in which we program the body to continue to function optimally. After that, people go into a reentry phase where they start trying the foods that they weren’t eating while they were in the fat burn phase.

Many people who have lost substantial amounts of weight have had the discouraging experience of getting it all back. Some get it all back and more. Yo-yo dieting doesn’t work in the long run. In order to lose weight and keep it off permanently, the body needs to be reset and the new settings have to be maintained. That’s what NutriMost does and that’s why NutriMost works.

Come on out to the Open House on Saturday, May 21st, and talk to some people who have found the answers to their weight problems with NutriMost.
