Happy New
Year! If you made a New Year’s resolution to lose weight and to become more
fit, you are not alone. Making a resolution is the easy part. The big question
in January is whether you will stick with it. Waking up on New Year’s Day and
realizing that there’s a price to pay for whatever unfortunate excesses may
have happened the night before, or throughout the holiday season, is the hard
part.
Fortunately,
help is available. Joining a fitness club or signing up for a weight loss
program are relatively easy. Lots of people do it in January and it works for
some of them. However, to achieve your goals, it’s important to find the right
fit.

Halloween has come and gone. Now, The
Agricultural Fair is in town. From candy corn to cotton candy to deep fried
Twinkies, some of the things that people eat at this time of year are
absolutely spooky! I urge people to think about what they’re consuming and to
avoid things that will have negative health consequences.
As people age, many face health
challenges that they never had to think about when they were younger. The good
news is that there are things a person can do to avoid many of the health
problems associated with aging. The even better news is that help is available.
With that in mind, here are some of the scariest health problems people face as
they grow older.
General decline in health leading to
inability to take care of oneself
Courtesy of Vibrant Life
Health Center
Many people take their health for
granted until something goes wrong. As people age, there can be a tendency for
more and more to go wrong. The bad habits, unhealthy diets, and lack of
exercise begin to take their toll in the form of serious health problems.
Eventually, many who have taken care of themselves and others for decades get
to the point where they can no longer live independent lives.
Since most people enjoy having the
ability to take care of themselves, losing that ability is very scary. The good
news is that if you establish a plan with long term and short term goals you
can maintain a healthy weight, enjoy the ability to exercise, and keep your
body in top shape! You can maintain an optimal level of health right through to
the end, or very close to it.
Loss of memory and mental acuity,
Alzheimer’s Disease
As people age, many do lose their mental
sharpness and their ability to remember things. Many people have family members
or friends who appear to be losing their memory a little more each day. When
someone you’ve loved for your whole life forgets who you are, it’s truly
frightening. The prospect of that happening to oneself is truly terrifying.
Consuming the right nutrients and
staying physically active are two of the keys to maintaining mental fitness. Sitting
on the couch, eating potato chips, and watching whatever shows up on the screen
will not keep a person mentally healthy.
For optimal mental health, it’s very
important to stay in the game by continuing to learn new things. Nourishing the
mind is just as important as eating the right foods. The more people do that,
the less likely they are to see a decline in their mental capabilities.
Being overweight and being unable to
lose excess weight
Bodies in motion tend to stay in motion
and remain healthy. If you don’t believe it, check out a few videos of Jack LaLanne,
the godfather of fitness. Bodies at rest tend to stay at rest and pack on the
pounds. If you don’t believe that, take a look at some of your neighbors, family
members, or friends. For most people, body metabolism changes as they age. When
people reach their 30s, 40s, and 50s, they usually don’t burn calories as fast
as they did in their 20s. This is why it becomes more difficult for most people
to lose weight as they age.
When people begin the NutriMost Weight
Loss program at Vibrant Life Health Center, we measure their weight and we
measure their bodies in key areas. One other thing we measure is metabolic age.
We do this at the beginning of the program and then again at the end.
Invariably, after successfully completing forty days in the program, a person’s
metabolic age has been substantially reduced, usually by a decade or more.
This is very important because losing
weight is only part of the equation. To achieve permanent weight loss, a person
needs to learn the in’s and out’s of their personal metabolism. Patients who go
through our Programs weather its Life in Balance, NutriMost, or even Functional
Medicine we show people this key component to long term health and vitality!
Taking a decade or more off one’s metabolic age is one of the keys to keeping
the weight off. Taking the weight off and keeping it off is also one of the
best things a person can do to avoid many conditions associated with age, including
diabetes, arthritis, and many other diseases.
Heart attack, heart disease, stroke
Courtesy of NutriMost
A healthy cardiovascular system is an
essential component of good health. When heart disease sets in, the body can’t
function properly. When the blood is carrying things that can build up in the
form of plaque in blood vessels, a person can suffer a stroke which can cause
brain damage and disrupt the nervous system in such a way that parts of the
body cease to function properly.A heart
attack caused by hardening of the arteries can maim or kill.
The foods we consume have an enormous
impact on cardiovascular health. They can help to keep things flowing properly
or they can create blockages. It’s so important to keep this in mind as we
choose what to eat and what not to eat. Also, exercise is extremely important
for heart health. A good fitness program can certainly contribute to keeping a
heart strong and extending a person’s life expectancy.
Loss of balance resulting in falls and
broken limbs
Wikimedia Commons
The thought of falling and not being
able to get up is one of the scariest things of all. Remember the commercial? A
good sense of balance that keeps one from falling is certainly one of the
things people take for granted until they take a tumble. As people age, they do
sometimes lose the sense of balance they had when they were younger. To make
matters worse, bones can break more easily as we get older, and when they do it
takes longer for them to heal.
Maintaining a healthy weight and staying
fit can definitely help a person to keep his or her sense of balance throughout
life. Another thing that is very important for maintaining a sense of balance
is musculoskeletal health. The bones and muscles not only affect the way we
move it also plays a key role in brain/body communication. While many people
think of chiropractic care primarily as the answer to injuries, routine
adjustments can provide a tremendous health benefit.
Life In Balance
At Vibrant Life Health Center, we now
offer a program that brings all the key components for wellness together under
one roof. Our Life In Balance Program addresses weight and nutrition, fitness
and exercise, musculoskeletal health, and more. Our goal is to help patients

At Vibrant Life Health Center, we like to use all the tools that are available to help our patients achieve their fitness objectives. One thing that has become increasingly available in the past two decades is an exercise technique called Whole Body Vibration.
People working out at a gym exercise various muscle groups one group at a time. Whole Body Vibration (WBV) is a method of exercise which engages many muscle groups simultaneously. WBV involves side-to-side motion which forces the body to regain balance very quickly. All of the muscle groups engage in rebalancing. Muscles contract at a rate of up to 30 times per second as they burn fat and build muscle.
“With whole-body vibration, you stand, sit or lie on a machine with a vibrating platform. As the machine vibrates, it transmits energy to your body, forcing your muscles to contract and relax dozens of times each second… Some research shows that whole-body vibration, when performed correctly and under medical supervision when needed, can reduce back pain, improve balance in older adults, and reduce bone loss.” Edward Laskowski, M.D., Mayo Clinic
Courtesy of VibaBody
Does WBV Really Work?
While WBV may seem new to many, using vibrations to achieve fitness goals has been going on for centuries. According to Health Status, Gustav Zander was a physician and inventor from Sweden who developed exercise machines that used springs, weights, and pulleys in the 1800s. Many of those machines utilized vibrations. In 1895, Dr. John Harvey Kellogg also used vibration technology for therapeutic purposes. In the 1960s, German innovators took things a step further when they developed an exercise technique which they called rhythmic neuromuscular stimulation.
Starting in the 1960s, the space race between Russia and the United States generated a wide variety of research and development. The Russians saw that being exposed to zero gravity conditions in outer space could cause severe deterioration of bone density and muscle mass. They recognized that WBV could be used to simulate gravity. They used WBV machines to help Cosmonauts maintain good levels of bone density and muscle mass. After being in orbit, Russian Cosmonauts were able to return to Earth in nearly the same condition as when they blasted off.
WBV technology has been developing and improving ever since. WBV is now being used all over the world. WBV is known to raise both heart rate and blood oxygen levels. Research also shows that cellulite may be significantly reduced through WBV. Better circulation helps the body to drain toxins and lymphatic waste. This reduces swelling in areas of the body affected by cellulite. WBV is unlike working out on a treadmill. It gives a gentle workout that is not hard on the joints. Ten minutes on a good WBV machine can be like a one-hour workout in the gym.

WBV and Gravity
WBV can help people who are in good shape as well as people who have gotten out of shape. WBV minimizes stress to the joints and muscles. The big key is that with WBV, gravity does the work. Gravity plays a major role in fitness. The force of gravity stimulates muscle development and builds strength. Because of that, people who can lift more are generally considered stronger than those who can’t lift as much.
Gravity is the force which, normally, keeps people firmly connected to planet Earth. Standing, walking and lifting things require us to resist gravity. Getting out of bed in the morning and standing up are acts of resistance against the force of gravity. The more people move around, the more they are resisting gravity and the fitter they get. Sedentary lifestyles in which people remain seated most of the time, reduce resistance to gravity.
Benefits of WBV
Maintaining muscle strength and cardiovascular health are keys to health as human beings age. As they get older, many people move around less, and this is detrimental to their health. The ability to move around, resisting gravity, is one of the definitive signs that a person is aging well. The inability to move around is a clear signal that a person’s health is declining.
WBV can help in each of the following important areas.
WBV effectively increases muscle mass and tones muscles at the same time. Having more muscle enables people to burn more calories, which, of course, leads to weight loss.
WBV also improves flexibility, range of motion, balance, and mobility.
WBV reduces pain and stiffness from arthritis, fibromyalgia, and other painful ailments.
WBV elevates HGH and serotonin while decreasing cortisol (a hormone produced by stress).
WBV can help to strengthen muscles after injury, illness, or surgery.
Bone Density
Bone density is a measurement of the amount of calcium and other minerals in a segment of bone. Higher mineral contents indicate higher bone density and strength. As people age, their bone density normally decreases. When that happens, the risk for osteoporosis increases. Numerous studies have shown that WBV can improve bone density. For more information, check the links below.
Patients at the Vibrant Life Health Center can get access to the center’s state-of-the-art VibaBody Slimmer machine. The VibaBody Slimmer was specifically designed to help users improve muscle strength and to enhance physical performance. The VibaBody Slimmer uses Oscillating Vibration Technology.
What is Oscillating Vibration Technology (OVT)? First and foremost, it is widely considered the safest form of WBV. Oscillating simply means that it goes back and forth – quickly. Some people use oscillating devices to wax their cars. Other folks use oscillating sanders for woodworking. If you’ve ever refinished wood floors, you may have used an oscillating sander to do that.
The VibaBody Slimmer delivers an oscillating mechanical stimulus that exercises the entire body. The motion is back and forth, very quickly. It’s gentle and effective at the very same time. Almost anyone can enjoy the benefits of WBV!
WBV has been thoroughly tested by Russian cosmonauts! That means it’s especially good for anyone considering space travel in the near future! It’s also excellent for people who have no desire to venture outside of Earth’s atmosphere. Call today to learn more about WBV and other services offered by Vibrant Life Health Center.

I’m humbled to be a tool that people can utilize to get their lives into balance. Some people are doing a lot in their attempts to lose weight and get healthier but they’re just not seeing the results they want. I have the privilege of helping people get past those frustrations and get to the next level with their health. For example, Hector was walking a lot and watching what he ate, but not seeing the results he wanted. With NutriMost, he experienced tremendous results.
Hector’s Story
“I’m a little bit of a health nut, and I met Dr. Thomas’s wife through the Chamber of Commerce. I’m a great believer in chiropractic and I’ve been going to chiropractors since I was 30. I’ve been to many capable doctors over the years. I’ve found that when you leave a chiropractor’s office, the doctor usually tells you that you’ll feel better the next day. With Dr. Thomas, I felt better immediately. He did a great job on my neck and back. Instead of feeling better the next day, I felt better by the time the appointment was finished.
“As I mentioned, I’m into health and fitness. I was walking five miles a day and trying to eat the right things, but I wasn’t seeing results in terms of my weight. After several visits to Vibrant Life for chiropractic adjustments, I became interested in the NutriMost program. Dr. Thomas has an area in his office where numerous hand-written testimonials of NutriMost patients are hung up. It was obvious to me that NutriMost has been producing excellent results for lots of people. I also had an opportunity to speak to several of Dr. Thomas’s NutriMost patients while I was at Vibrant Life. Their enthusiasm was infectious.
“When I started on NutriMost, I anticipated lots of hunger. Surprisingly, that was not the case. You eat real foods that are healthy and satisfying. Instead of eating junk foods out of a bag or a box, I’ve learned to prepare healthy alternatives. The foods I’m now eating satisfy my appetite and give me all the energy I need. There are lots of foods to choose from. NutriMost taught me how to eat the foods that will take the weight off and keep it off.
Courtesy of Vibrant Life
“I found that NutriMost is a very motivating program. Believe me, when you lose a pound and a half the first day, as I did, you feel highly motivated. By the end of the first week, I had lost six pounds. With other programs you might lose a pound or two per week, maybe six pounds in a month. If you really stick with some of these other programs and never have a setback, you might lose anywhere from 12 to 24 pounds in three months. It’s easy to become discouraged when it takes forever to get modest results. On the other hand, seeing results day after day and week after week on NutriMost kept me motivated. It’s not hard to stick with a program when you’re seeing such positive results.
“The ability to contact Dr. Thomas was key for me and it is for just about everybody who gets on the program. That was especially true in the beginning when I had lots of questions. I’m not a big guy and I lost 30 pounds in 40 days. The really cool thing is that by the time I finished, I had all the information I needed to keep the weight off, including all the great recipes. I had learned about foods that I really liked that would keep me healthy.
“One of the most important things NutriMost did for me was to educate me about how different foods were affecting me. You don’t see that in other programs. NutriMost taught me which foods would take me out of fat burning mode and put me back into fat making mode, so to speak. Those foods vary from person to person so you really have to know which foods affect you in that way. For some people pizza is bad. For other people, pizza is just fine. I learned that if I ate the wrong stuff, I immediately put on weight. I also learned that if I got right back on to the good foods I’d learned about on the program the weight came right back off.
“There are some serious side effects to the NutriMost program that people should be aware of. For example, my blood pressure dropped about 25 points and it’s now in the normal range at 120 over 77. Losing weight is also good for the joints. Prior to NutriMost, I had pain in the back, neck, elbows, and knees. After NutriMost, those joint pains were almost completely gone. Also, following an injury to my ankle I had pain for a year. Now I barely notice it. Other unanticipated side effects include better sleep with no snoring, a higher energy level, and an increased libido.”
Understanding Fat Metabolism
Unlike other weight loss programs, NutriMost analyzes fat metabolism. Fat metabolism is controlled by organs, hormones, neurotransmitters, vitamins, minerals, and metabolites. There are lots of moving parts and when they are not working together the way they should, the fat doesn’t get burned. If you never figure out why your body isn’t burning fat the way it should, efforts to lose weight will be very frustrating, as millions upon millions of people know.
Courtesy of Vibrant Life
Phase One of NutriMost involves repairing the patient’s fat metabolism. After the fat metabolism is running properly, the body gets reset. We give people an in-depth understanding of how the system works, what throws the system off-course, and how to get back on track if that becomes necessary. With NutriMost, there are no magic pills that make people lose weight. We equip patients with the nutritional weapons they need to succeed.
If you’d like to lose 20 pounds or more in just forty days, the NutriMost system can certainly help. Check out the written testimonials and the video testimonials. If you have questions about NutriMost, make an appointment and I will be happy to answer them.

Another NutriMost Success Story! Abby went from a size 12 to a size 6.
Abby came to us in January ready to make some changes in her life! She specifically wanted to change the direction her health was going in. Six months after beginning the NutriMost plan, Abby is thriving. She feels great, she looks great, and she has truly transformed her life! Check out her story below and on the First Coast Living video.

"Nutrimost was a gift that I gave to myself. After eighteen years of raising my two children and seventeen years of taking care of my parents in my home, it was time for me to do something special for me. I started in January this year. At the end of forty days, I had taken off 22 pounds. Then I did the NutriMost reset and took off another 12 pounds. My old clothes are in the garage and I'll be selling them at a garage sale.
"I'm an executive business coach, and I believe that if you want to be great at anything, you need the help of a coach. If you want to achieve tremendous results, you need someone to hold you accountable. In this case, Dr. Thomas was my health and maintenance coach. I was texting my weight to Dr. Thomas every day, and I didn't want to give him a bad number. That's one of the reasons I really stuck with the plan.
"There were challenging days, like one day when I was in South America and couldn't even read the menu at a restaurant. We texted back and forth and Dr. Thomas gave me a helpful suggestion on what to select. Before getting on NutriMost, I didn't prepare meals at home very often. I frequently ate out for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. That's one of the reasons my weight was where it was.
"One of the initial challenges I had with NutriMost was getting my portions right, learning that my limit for meat was equal to the size of my hand. I cooked a lot with my George Foreman Grill. Once I had everything in place, it was not difficult to stick with the program. I've learned about portion control. I've also learned that you can cheat from time to time, but you have to get right back with the program the next day."

Life in Balance Tip: Fresh and local produce is the best.
One of the nice things about living in Northeast Florida is that we’re in a region with an excellent climate for growing a wide variety of produce. When we go to a place like the local farmers' markets at the Arts' Walk, or on Beaver Street, or even the produce sections at flea markets, we can purchase lots of nutritious food that's very fresh and has no preservatives. Also, we can find fresh local produce throughout the year. In other parts of the country, there are times of the year when practically nothing edible can be grown.
Courtesy of Wikipedia
When you get foods that are fresh and have no preservatives, you get food that nutritionally will give you more of a life in balance. Fresh produce is tastiest when it's "in season." Also, when produce is in season, there's normally lots of it. That actually keeps the pricing down. So, when fresh produce is at its best, it's also frequently available at its lowest price. For example, when watermelons are at their juiciest and tastiest, like they are right now, they also tend to be priced low because there are plenty of them.
At a farmers' market, you can actually talk to the people who grow the food and ask them how they do it. Those conversations can be very interesting and illuminating. At the Riverside Arts' Walk, you can even get a calendar which shows what is in season from month to month. That information will help you to plan meals that are both nutritious and delicious.
The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services has a website called Fresh From Florida, which makes the case for buying local. It also has information on what's in season from month to month. Weather conditions and other factors may shift the seasons a bit for any crop. Still, the experts have a pretty good idea of what grows and when.
So what's in season right now? Avocado, Watermelon, Mushrooms, Passion Fruit, Mango, Lychee, Carambola, Guava, Longan, Peanut
Many foods in the list above will continue to be available through August. If you’ve never tried these foods, I encourage you to do so. When you get adventurous with food, you sometimes find new things that you and/or members of your family really enjoy. Here are a few additional resources for information about the benefits of buying locally grown produce.
This article features the personal testimony of Abby, a woman who lost over 30 pounds on the NutriMost program. I have also discussed the benefits of eating produce that is grown in our region.
