Happy New Year! The beginning of a new year is a great time to start something new. In 2017, I’ll be writing posts for Vibrant Life Health Center’s blog about once per month. These posts will be from the perspective of the doctor’s wife. The focus will sometimes be on issues affecting women, but it will also delve into general purpose topics as well. Like my husband, I hope to impart information that will be useful to readers.

New Year! New You!

By Dr. Jon Thomas, DC, Board Certified Chiropractic Physician.
One of the most popular New Year’s resolutions of all is to lose weight and to get back in shape. Most people know that being at a healthy weight and being physically fit is simply better than being overweight and out of shape. Another reason people make resolutions is that they know there’s an inevitable price to pay for overindulging throughout the holiday season.
Unfortunately, about one-third of all New Year’s resolutions are broken by February. What makes the difference between a New Year’s Resolution that sticks, and one that gets dropped by Valentine’s Day? Here are a few tips on how to make a resolution that you’ll have a shot at keeping.

Taking your Healthcare Out-of-the-box.

“If you always do what you've always done, you will always get what you've always got.” That quote has been attributed to several people, including Albert Einstein, Henry Ford, and Mark Twain. Although the origin of the saying is not known for certain, the wisdom of it continues to ring true. The principle can be applied widely, and it certainly applies to healthcare.
If watching TV for ten hours a day while munching on junk food and drinking sweet carbonated beverages has contributed to you being fifty or more pounds’ overweight, continuing the same behavior will probably increase your weight even more. On the other hand, if exercising regularly and eating good foods that have been minimally processed has resulted in you maintaining a healthy weight and having good health, continuing that behavior will probably continue to produce similar results for you.

Food Facts: QR Codes, GMOs, and other trends in packaged foods.

By Tracy Thomas,
Doctor's Wife & Mother of Four.
Dr. Thomas recently wrote a blog post about the advantages of buying locally grown foods, especially from farmers’ markets. We’re fortunate to live in a region where good things grow throughout the whole year, and those foods can be brought to market very shortly after they are harvested. No preservatives and no packaging.
One thing Dr. Thomas didn’t mention is that those fresh foods generally don’t require labelling. What you see is what you get. Bananas are bananas, tomatoes are tomatoes, and potatoes are potatoes. It’s fairly straightforward.
However, for lots of reasons, many of us are not able to go one hundred percent natural in our food choices. Most people buy packaged foods at least some of the time. When it comes to packaged foods, it’s very important to read and understand the labels.
The Food and Drug Administration and Food Labeling Requirements
Courtesy of Wikimedia Commons
According to the official FDA website, “The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is responsible for assuring that foods sold in the United States are safe, wholesome and properly labeled. This applies to foods produced domestically, as well as foods from foreign countries.”
The FDA website has a great deal of information about lists of ingredients, how foods should be labelled, and much more. There’s even information on how companies should figure out serving sizes to include with their food labels.
Comedian Brian Regan tells jokes about the serving size for fig newtons. The serving size on the label that he saw was two cookies. He asked, “Who eats two cookies?” The serving size for his ice cream was half a cup. “Who eats half a cup?”
Nutritional information is generally presented per serving. In other words, the number of calories printed on the label is the number of calories per serving, not per container. It’s important to understand that when making food choices. If the container has three servings in it and you like to eat the whole thing, the calories, grams of fat, etc. all have to be multiplied by three.

QR Codes and Food Labels
One recent trend in food labelling is the use of Quick Response codes. They’re also known as QR codes and they consist of black and white blocks of shapes, lines, and squares that are now seen on many products including packaged foods. QR codes can be scanned with smart phone apps. Once scanned, information about the product can be accessed.
President Obama recently signed a law requiring food companies to flag genetically modified ingredients in plain writing, an icon developed by regulators, or with digitally readable QR codes. The new law allows companies to disclose the presence of GMOs using QR codes rather than words on labels. This news was recently covered in a Wall Street Journal article.
So, for some food products, the only way to get nutritional information is with the QR codes. That’s fine for people who have an app, but it’s tough luck for people who don’t have an app. Here are two of the apps that are now available.
QR Code Reader: To scan a QR code or barcode, simply open the app, point the camera at the code, and you’re done. There’s no need to take a photo or press a button. The app will automatically recognize any code your camera is pointing at.
Shazam: According to the company website, this app is “one of the world’s most popular apps, used by more than 100 million people each month to magically connect to the world around them.” This app does much more than read QR Codes.
Growing concerns about Genetically Modified Organisms
“GMOs are organisms that have been created through the application of transgenic, gene-splicing techniques that are part of biotechnology.” OrganicItsWorthIt
One thing that many people have become concerned about in their food is the presence of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs). Genetic Engineering, the science of GMOs, allows genetic material (DNA) from one species to be transferred into another species. The result is organisms with combinations of genes from plants, animals, bacteria, and even viral gene pools.
Genetic engineering is a new science and there are a host of unknowns about genetically engineered crops and GMOs. Research is accumulating which suggests that GMOs may not be safe. If GMOs are in products, many consumers want to be aware of it and they deserve to have the means to find that important information. Many consumers want to avoid GMOs as much as they possibly can.
If you’re concerned about GMOs, as everyone should be, start looking for the Certified NON GMO label on the food products you purchase.
The trend toward fewer ingredients
Another interesting trend in the food industry is the movement toward fewer ingredients. In fact, fewer ingredients is now being used as a selling point for many foods.  Many people feel that fewer ingredients equates to more natural and better for the body. There’s certainly some logic to that.
Products ranging from chocolates by Hershey to ice cream by Haagen Dazs to snack bars from General Mills now consist of fewer ingredients than similar products in the past. The Wall Street Journal recently published an interesting article about this trend in packaged foods.
Take back your health. Know what you’re putting into your body.
It’s extremely important to know what you’re putting into your body. The human body is complicated and it requires good foods in order to run optimally. If you can’t find the ingredients of a food product, you probably shouldn’t be eating it. If you need to get an app to read QR Codes, I encourage you not to put that off. Download an app and start using it.

This article discusses the importance of reading food labels and how to read food labels. I have also discussed nutritional information that is now available through QR codes, the trend of some food producers toward using fewer ingredients, and GMOs in food products.

Life in Balance: Taking Health to the Next Level

By Dr. Jon Thomas, DC, PSc.D, Board Certified Chiropractic Physician.

Many people’s lives have been transformed over the years at Vibrant Life Health Center. We’ve had Chiropractic patients come to us with chronic pain and musculoskeletal issues that have been resolved. The transformations they’ve experienced have enabled them to return to doing things that they thought they might never be able to do again.

We’ve had patients who had serious weight problems, problems with their metabolism, and things that just weren’t working properly in their bodies.  People want to know how they can get to the next level. At Vibrant Life, we’re going to help them to do exactly that. We call it Life in Balance, and it’s a comprehensive approach to optimized health, fitness, and wellness.

Life in Balance will incorporate wellness Chiropractic. Lots of people associate chiropractic with getting well after an injury of some sort, and chiropractic is certainly great for that. The thing many people don’t realize is that Chiropractic is also good for staying well and for keeping the nervous system functioning optimally. As I’ve mentioned in previous blog posts, everything in the body is connected to the spine. Spine health is crucial for living a truly healthy life.

The program will also encompass nutritional guidance so people won’t have to guess about what supplement to take and when or how to take it. With blood-based micro - macro nutrient testing, we’re going to show people what their bodies are truly deficient in and what is optimal. People are going to have an exact plan on what supplements they should be taking in order to address their specific deficiencies based on testing and then also re-testing post protocol to verify that the needs have been fully addressed.

Another misunderstood and misused concept in health planning is detoxification steps. There are many methods related to detoxification but many are actually not effective, not safe, and confusing. The protocols in Life in Balance come from some of the longest used methods in history. Not only will you have the steps laid out for you, you will have a specific order by organ and when to cycle on and off the detoxification protocols. This will ensure that your body will get maximum benefit!

Foods are also pivotal to health and wellness. With Life in Balance a food plan is developed using biofeedback to ensure cellular coherence with the foods you consume. This plan is comprehensive and lists good foods, avoidance foods, and a buffer in between. Within this plan you're not guessing…you know that you know that your food plan matches your body's needs.

Fitness is another key component for Life in Balance. Someone might want to get to the point where he or she can walk a mile at a good pace without huffing and puffing. Someone else might want to gain muscle mass and get the six-pack abs they had in their 20s back. Either way, we’re going to help participants reach their fitness objectives.

Courtesy of U.S. Navy
Life in Balance is not a one-size-fits-all program. It’s comprehensive and tailored to the individual. A supplement that works well for one person might not work at all for someone else. There are reasons for that. Everybody is different and everybody has their own unique needs. We’ll be using the best technologies and time-tested methodologies to develop an individualized program for each participant.

This is an in depth approach to optimal health. We’re going to look at everything going on in a person’s body and we’re going to address every challenge that might keep a person from reaching his or her goals. We want to give our patients much more than one or two pieces to the health and fitness puzzle. We want to give them all the pieces and then help them fit those pieces together so they can experience true transformation and start living the lives they’ve always wanted to live.

How my daughter, Avery, got her hair back: A personal Life in Balance testimony from Dr. Thomas

According to WebMD, alopecia areata is a type of hair loss that occurs when your immune system mistakenly attacks hair follicles, which is where hair growth begins. The damage to the follicle is usually not permanent. Experts do not know why the immune system attacks the follicles. Alopecia areata is most common in people younger than 20, but children and adults of any age may be affected. Women and men are affected equally.

My daughter, Avery, was diagnosed with alopecia at 5 years old. Tracy and I took Avery to several medical Doctors. They told us that she had an auto-immune disease, and there was nothing that could be done about it. Avery was told she would never have hair again. That news was devastating! Most people consider hair an important part of their personal appearance. It’s especially important to young women in our culture.

A friend recommended that we take Avery to a Naturopathic doctor who thought outside the box.  He tested Avery’s blood, urine, and saliva. After evaluating the results, he determined that Avery’s body was not producing HCL and her stomach PH level was an 8 when it should have been a 2. Based on that information, which traditional medical doctors had not considered, we made some changes. Today Avery is thirteen years old and she has a beautiful head of hair. That creates a whole other problem for a father, but I think I’ll be able to cope.

Traditional medicine does not have the answers to every health challenge. Sometimes, people need do their own research and seek out a practitioner who thinks outside the traditional medicine box. With Life in Balance, when patients have a problem for which there doesn’t seem to be a solution, we’re going to consider all the options, including some that may be considered outside the box.

Safe, Fast, Effective Weight Loss

By  Dr. Jon Thomas D.C PSc.D, Board Certified Chiropractic Physician.

With other popular weight loss programs, including Jenny Craig, NutriSystem, and Weight Watchers, people might lose up to one or two whole pounds per week. The emphasis here is on the word “might” because there’s no guarantee.
On those other programs, the kind of results most people are looking for typically take twenty to thirty weeks - half a year depending on how you look at it. It’s not unusual for NutriMost patients to lose as much as twenty to forty pounds in forty days.
Can't Lose Weight? It's Probably Not Your Fault
Many people try to lose weight at the beginning of every year and many end up discouraged and disappointed. Additives and chemicals in the foods most Americans eat can disrupt hormones and neurotransmitters. This makes their bodies resistant to weight loss and even exercise.
The NutriMost Ultimate Fat Loss program relies on proven technology that reads and details the factors that control fat storage and metabolism.  For lasting and permanent weight loss, the body’s chemistry must be corrected and brought into balance.
Hormones play a much bigger role in health than most people realize. Surprisingly, relatively healthy individuals who have a good diet including recommended supplements may still suffer from hormonal imbalances. The resulting symptoms can include weight gain, fatigue, and moodiness.
The proper balance of estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, cortisol, and other hormones is one of the keys to maintaining good health. With NutriMost, you’ll transform your body inside and out. The NutriMost system helps restore Hormone balance and metabolic response so your body learns to consume its stored fat. By correcting deficiencies, NutriMost transforms the body into a fat-burning machine.

The NutriMost Difference
Instead of losing one or two pounds per week, NutriMost patients typically lose half a pound to two pounds of fat per day.
Instead of working on losing the weight for half a year to see results, NutriMost patients see substantial results in six short weeks – one and a half months.
NutriMost patients don’t experience the hunger and cravings associated with other programs.
While people in other weight loss programs typically go through mood swings, NutriMost patients typically have improved energy.
Dr. Jon Thomas, Director of
Vibrant Life Health Center
NutriMost is Scientifically Sound
and Doctor Supervised
The NutriMost Ultimate Fat Loss System is doctor supervised and completely different from any diet program you may have tried in the past. Most weight loss programs focus exclusively on a diet. With NutriMost, the focus is on each patient’s unique chemistry and hormone balance. NutriMost stops fat storage and programs the body to consume the energy stored in fat cells. Many patients lose 20 pounds or more in just 40 days on NutriMost.
NRF: The Most Powerful Technology for a Better Life
The key to the program is NutriMost Resonant Frequency (NRF) technology. It takes a hormonal fingerprint of all the factors that pertain to weight gain and fat retention. The data provided by NRF technology enable practitioners to optimize hormone levels for each patient, and to activate the neurotransmitters for fat loss.
In essence, a recipe will be developed to precisely address any deficiencies the patient may have. For example, the recipe for a patient may be 1270 parts Adrenaline, 830 parts Thymomodulin, 50 parts vitamin B6, etc. With NutriMost, the practitioner develops a recipe to correct hormone levels, a recipe for detoxing the body from any toxic substances, and a recipe for burning fat.
Losing weight is great and it’s the initial objective for most NutriMost patients. However, there are several other important benefits to correcting imbalances in the body. After completing a cycle in NutriMost, many patients find that it takes less time to heal from injuries and illnesses. Many also see significant improvements in these areas:

  • Diabetes
  • High cholesterol
  • High blood pressure
  • Liver problems
  • Thyroid disorders
  • Sleep apnea
  • Fibromyalgia

I feel better than I have in fifteen or twenty years.”  Ed's testimonial
“As long as I stayed with the NutriMost routine, the pounds came off. Before I got on the program, I had lots of headaches. I had headaches every day. Since going through NutriMost, I haven’t gotten nearly as many headaches and when I do get a headache, it goes away a lot faster. For me, that’s just amazing. Anybody who’s willing to put their mind to it can take the weight off.” Leslie's testimonial
“It's been a great experience for me. I was able to stop taking all of my medications and I feel amazing. It's a full health makeover. It's not the weight that you lose, but the knowledge that you gain that makes this program so different from anything else.” Amy's testimonial

Turn Your New Year’s Resolution into a Fitness Revolution.

By  Dr. Jon Thomas D.C PSc.D, Board Certified Chiropractic Physician.

According to the Static Brain Research Institute, the most popular New Year’s Resolution is to lose weight. One obvious reason for this is that lots of people are overweight and they’d like to lose some of it. Another reason is that New Year’s caps off the holiday season, a season in which many people eat and drink to excess.
How long do people maintain their resolve to lose weight? That varies. It could be anywhere from less than an hour to a whole year. According to a poll by Franklin Covey Research, 30% of all New Year's resolutions are broken before February.
Keep It Simple
Simplicity and focus are two keys to a successful New Year’s resolution. Three, or five, or ten resolutions is a lot to concentrate on. Making one or two resolutions that you can focus on will increase the likelihood of success.
“Most resolutions actually require many behavior changes. A successful weight-loss program, for example, calls for more than just a decision to eat less. You have to shop and cook differently, start or ramp up an exercise routine, maybe even ditch certain social or family events,” Sarah Mahoney writes in an article for WebMD.
Be Realistic
A New Year’s resolution should be challenging, but not impossible. Most people can lose some weight. On the other hand, it’s probably not realistic for someone in their fifties to think they can get back to the weight or fitness level they had when they completed military boot-camp in their twenties or when they were on the track team in high school.
In a Health.com article by Dana Leigh Smith about setting resolutions that work, Toby Amidor, a New York dietitian, said, "People tend to fall off the weight-loss wagon so quickly because their goals are unrealistic. When people feel as though they've failed, they tend to throw in the towel for good instead of giving their resolution another shot."
Take Ownership of Your New Year’s Resolution
The following questions will help you to determine if you can truly take ownership of your resolution.
  • Is this resolution my idea or someone else's?
  • Does this resolution motivate and energize me?
  • Does this resolution fit with other factors in my life, including values and long-term plans?

The Power of Commitment
Commitment is another key to a successful resolution. Without commitment, people tend to quit after a few setbacks. Successful resolutions start with a strong sense of commitment. MindTools has the following tips for committing to a resolution.
  • Announce your resolution to everyone around you – they will help hold you accountable.
  • Develop a ceremony to mark the beginning of your commitment – this makes it more "real" and special for you.
  • A serious resolution is worth putting some thought into. Don't leave your choice of resolution to the last minute.
  • Write out your New Year’s resolution. The simple act of writing it down will embed the resolution more deeply in your mind than just saying it to yourself or someone else.

The Personal Connection at Vibrant Life
For many people, one of the keys to success at losing weight is having an accountability partner or a coach to keep them motivated. When they feel like slipping back into old habits that don’t align with their goals of losing weight and improving their health, it helps a lot to be able to talk to someone who is understanding and supportive.
One of the biggest differences between the NutriMost program at the Vibrant Life Health Center and other weight loss programs is that we maintain a strong interpersonal connection with our patients all the way through the program. We’re committed to keeping them motivated and helping them to maintain their resolve.
Patients can send me a text at any time of the day with a question or some challenge they’re facing, and I will do my utmost to answer them very quickly. I’ve had patients text me as early as 6 a.m. and as late as 10 p.m. I’m an accountability partner and a coach for my patients and that’s not just lip service. That’s one of the things people mention over and over in their testimonial videos.
I want each and every patient to stick with the program to the end where they’ve really made a change in their lives and have begun to achieve their health and fitness goals. And that doesn’t just mean the numbers on the scale. It has to do with transforming a person’s life. That’s why I talk about transformation all the time.

Tracy, a Nurse Practitioner, lost 84 pounds.
“I haven’t looked like this since I was twenty and I’m still getting used to it. It’s exciting. One of the things that helped me get started was seeing the results someone else got on NutriMost. I had a friend who lost 38 pounds. The science made sense and it resonated with me. I wasn’t hungry on NutriMost. Any diet is difficult. You have to have commitment and you have to have the right mindset. I lost seven pounds in the first week. Every day, I was wondering if I could lose more than the day before. It was very motivating. I could send a text to Dr. Jon as last as 10 p.m. and get an answer back from him.”
